I've had my Victorio strainer for about 30 years, and every year I have to clean rust off of the sieve when I take it out to do my applesauce. So, I scrub, scrub with a bottle brush. It takes forever. Is there a better way?

Perhaps it's time to 'retire' the old girl - use it for a dry flower pot. Amazon has brand new stainless steel ones for $15. Electric models also available. Is your time worth more than $15 - just asking.

@fthunt You're probably right, but meanwhile I have a bushel of Empires staring me in the face! I think I will get a new one for next time, however. Thanks!

I would just scrub it really well again...Sometimes Coca-Cola works good to remove rust. When you are done using it for Apple sauce, wash it by hand, let it sit overnight to make sure it is 100% dry, and rub it down with a food grade oil..mineral oil is good. Store it covered up in a box or a fabric bag...like an old pillow case. Don’t use plastic bags.
The next time you use it, you will only need to wash off the oil. There will be no rust.

@Carmie Thanks for the advice! I have heard about oiling it before, but I didn't have mineral oil before. Now I do, so I'm going to try it.

If you need new parts contact Lehman's Hardware in Kidron, OH. They sell all sorts of replacment parts for Roma strainers and the Victorio as well. My DH just bought me an electric one from Ball. It's wonderful but I am still going to keep my Roma.

Try CLR?

Bar Keepers Friend. It's made to take off rust.

If you have a gas stove keep it in that bottom storage drawer that never gets used. My neighbor does this with her trusty cast iron pan and never has a rust problem in our high humidity area.

Another vote for BarKeepers Friend. I use it all the time for cleaning rust, works great! and pretty reasonably priced and can be found just about any store..Also would try the oil treatment for keeping rust at bay...Good Luck!
