I put my toppings and condiments in the bun first then place the dog on top.

I second, or third, the "New England Hot Dog" buns/rolls, (esp butter grilled on the sides, and esp filled to the brim with "Lobstah" Salad).
They are (not overly deeply), cut from the top down & open up, versus the sideways cut. Even the Non-New England hot dog buns, filled and turned on their side, cant avoid, to break open, and spill out the contents, & hot dog! yuck. Im spoiled!
If you're used to the New England Hot dog rolls, very difficult to convert & enjoy the sideways cut, non-New England rolls.
Not easy to find the New England buns but they do exist outside New England (see Amz below). And IMHO, do accomodate lots more, (non-fall out) hot dog fix'ns.
Once in a long while, yrs, I indulge in those wonderful delicious, bomb-throwing 7-11 hot dogs, & their New England provided buns. (But these loaded Hot Dogs nearly kill my body, for days)!
I load mine up with LOTS & LOTS of onions, chili, mustard, ?sour pickles, & whatever else I usually use. And I mean New England bun/dog LOADED with these toppings, and they NEVER, EVER break open, or spill out the contents on the New England buns they provide!
I'll even walk past the sideways hot dog buns, I like my hot dogs so filled, & my bites have to include it all. (Im spoiled that way)
"New England Split-top Frankfurter Hot Dog Bun or Lobster Rolls, 6 Pack" (Amz $14/6ct (vs 12ct, vs 24 ct)
Good luck! Enjoy!
(edit: cleaned it up above)

Moving south I missed these hot dog rolls. We have one store in our ares, Ingles, that carried them.

Yes, New Englander here. We use the split top buns. Those Peppridge Farm buns work if you are not in New England. Grill the sides in a pan with butter. Add your hot dog and toppings. Yum!

I typically only put a few toppings on hot dogs, but I have disliked standard hot dog buns since I was a kid; their texture and the fact that they get soggy so easily are offputting. For a few years now, I've used the smaller soft hoagie buns for my hot dogs and sausages, sometimes slicing the dogs/sausages in half and sometimes doubling up the really skinny dogs to fill the bun. (And this way I can just buy one type of bun for sandwiches and hot dogs.) Franz makes my favorite buns—I'm not sure how widely they may be distributed across the country. Another brand, Francisco International, makes similar buns, but they're often more expensive.

I rarely have hot dogs. When I do, I just use a slice of bread. Works for me. That's what we used when I was a kid growing up.

Do these even exist?
When I ate hot dogs, I used to like the Kosher, Beef, individually cellaphone wrapped ones. They were soo juicy, & tasty. But that was the ole days.
