Haven't Found Really Good Bananas Lately

Something must be going on with bananas.  I have bought both organic and non-organic from Costco, Walmart, Target and Sams and they all are going bad by the next day.  Seems they last 3 days at most. Them look fine then seem bruised all over and rot fast from the end.

I'm giving up on bananas for now.  I hope this passes whatever is causing it.

Do your bananas last????

I wish my bananas from Costco would ripen earlier than they do.

i generally buy my bananas green. buying them that way, i find i can control them more. i dont like them too ripe. if they get too soft or brown i make muffins or smoothies from them. yesterday i used three brownish ones to make banana chocolate chip muffins. i generally get them from sams club.

@Sooner.  I refrigerate all my bananas as soon as I get them.  They'll be good at least a week in the fridge.  In the winter, I keep them in the garage where it's cold but not freezing.

Th3 bananas themselves have d3creased in quality.  Man6 are only about 4" long and hardly qualify as a "whole banana".

I, too, have wondered what's going on.  No more Chichita Bananas either.

@Sooner  Yes.  I buy them slightly green.  Set bunch on a paper plate & wrap the stems in heavy duty aluminum foil.  Use 2 if you do not have heavy duty foil.

Stays yellow w/very few brown specks, banana stays firm & tastes very sweet.

FWIW:  Bananas are fruit fly carriers.  My local grocery stores uses a constant water spray-mist over its produces.  I take my bananas there to "wash them off" & place in plastic bag.  As soon as I get to my car, I remove the plastic bag.

I do that so I won't have to do it at home.

I just read yesterday if you wrap the stem end tightly in plastic wrap they will last longer. Haven't tried that yet but will as soon as I buy some.

@Sooner  Bananas have been difficult to find, very, very picky when purchasing them. Maybe only 4 bunches in 5 months. I look for short, slightly green stems, firm, yellow color, no marks or green. They have lasted origins have been from Mexico or Colombia 3 organic, 1 regular.

I don't eat bananas, but my husband does...everyday.

I never buy a full bunch.  I buy a few yellow for immediate use, slightly green for the next two days or so and green bananas that will ripen after that.

That way they don't all ripen at the same time.

Re: Haven't Found Really Good Bananas Lately

I don't eat bananas regularly, but mostly use them for baking banana bread or cooking them in my steel cut oats when I make that for breakfast.

I have noticed that the bananas I buy, especially the ones from Sam's' Club, tend to taste mealy.  Kind of dry tasting, no creamy textured mouth feel when eating and not as sweet tasting either.  Disappointing,

I buy them as green as I can get, a few at a time. Sometimes they don't last more than 2 days though. I wonder if they have been previously frozen.
