Re: Harry London candy tins

[ Edited ]

I tuned in to HSN's CIJ this weekend and saw this candy tin option.  I'm not sure if $129.99 for 8.25lbs of candy is reasonable but I like the tin!

Did the Q sell Russell Stover tins last Christmas?  I remember @BalletBabe  having a terrible time getting hers delivered but she never mentioned anything about the quality once she received them.

I have four HL Nutcracker tins that I got at Sam's Club two years in a row.  I had no idea they sell on eBay.  When I start clearing things out, I'll have to check that out.

(I only bought them for the tins.  I'm not a fan of the chocolates!)

I'm a pretty avid Sam's shopper and have never seen them there. I will watch this year and see if they do it again. Thanks for the heads up!

@Mominohio - I'll try to remember to post, if I see them in our local Sam's nearer Christmas.

I just threw a few of them away while clearing out a friends house.  I wanted to donate, but no one would take Christmas items.  No time to try to sell them.

@Carmie

I read about your adventures in some other post about the clearing out you were doing for a friend and noticed then you mentioned that no one would take Christmas items.

I don't disbelieve you at all, so don't get me wrong, but I find that almost unbelievable. Was it because of Covid and donation centers limited or is it a 'thing' in that area?

Here there are scores of thrifts that will take holiday stuff all year round. Some sell it all  year round and some store it for the season.

In case anyone else faces the same thing you did, here is a list of places (in my area) that might be helpful to someone else in the future or spark ideas of similar type places in their area.

All these places here take holiday all year long.

Hospice thrift stores

Goodwill

Volunteers of America

MCC thrifts.....run by the Mennonite church and raise funds for many things including third world assistance

Habitat for Humanity

and a host of small local thrifts

It says something about the candy when the tins are the main attraction.  I wonder if you can buy just the tins - i.e. with no candy inside.

@ValuSkr

Yeah, the tins always outclassed the candy in my opinion. At one time, I thought they were saying on air (and this was like maybe 2014 and before) that the tins were sourced in London (or at least designed by a company there). They were heavy, usually embossed, great painting, good color choices etc.

I like to collect the tins and use the to store holiday treats in, and I like to gift them. It seems like a much more substantial gift because of the quality of the tin.

Candy wasn't bad, just not the caliber of the tins! LOL

@Mominohio  I agree with you. I got the books and the nutcrackers as well. They make great hostess and in-law gifts. Their website says they sell at Costco, Sam's and BJ's (and other retailers). If QVC doesn't offer the tins, I'm going to check Costco.

@PA Mom-mom

I can't believe I've missed them at Sam's, but I'm going to keep an eye out this year. And unfortunately the closest Costco is about an hour away so I get so jealous when I hear/see what people get at Costco, cause I don't have easy access to one! LOL

Yes, Q has switched to Russell Stover tins the last couple of Christmases.

They are really nice quality too, but they are character tins, and kind of whimsical/childish rather than the more 'elegant' or grown up look of the Harry London tins of the past.

I bought the Russell Stover tins both years, and I have to say, I like the candy better than the Harry London Candy.

I am sure in light of how stuff is getting more and more expensive, and of less quality, we won't see those higher quality tins like Harry London did in the past. I expect they are from bygone days, never to return, or if they do, will be a fraction of the quality and style they once were.

@Mominohio   I have no idea why no one would take any holiday items.  My sister and I had a van full of stuff and we were turned away from Salvation Army, Community Aid Habitat for Humanity, and Goodwill as well as other small thrift stores.

It wasn't just Christmas stuff...we had Easter, Halloween. Thanksgiving as well as a lot or door wreaths for all seasons.  Beautiful garlands and many lights and lanterns were in the bunch.

They didn't sell well at a community yard sale either...though I did give away a whole collection of snow globes with a music box to children who were facinated with them.

Maybe they don't sell well off season.  My sister took some of more expensive collectible items to her home and will try to see if they will sell on Facebook Maeketplace closer to the holidays.

It is heartbreaking to have to throw out expensive and nice items.  It seems that the younger folks are not interested in anything anymore that they don't use 24/7.  They are minimalists and do not want to store seasonal and holiday items.

@Kachina624   Candy was excellent.  I hope they see them again this year.
