Hard Water Stains

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get rid of hard water stains on flatware, glasses, and everything in the kitchen? My parents have really bad water; everything in the kitchen is white and stained. They recently got a new water softener, so I hope that is going to help the problem. In the meantime I have been trying to clean everything, but nothing seems to work. I have tried the vinegar that I read online, but it did not work. I am going to get rid of the glasses, but I would like to be able to save the flatware and other items. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
