Great tasting coffee? What is it?

I have purchased numerous coffee makers, even a french press, and always made with bottled water.....I hate it all. What is a GREAT tasting coffee? I have wasted hundreds of dollars on coffee I throw away after I try it.

I think my problem is I like "out" coffee as my husband calls it and bless his heart he runs out and gets me a cup most mornings. Have I ruined my coffee taste buds by getting coffee at coffee houses? I just want to brew a really great cup of coffee at home.
