I'm not saying there aren't definite benefits, but I am VERY opposed to anyone being able to GENETICALLY modify my food without my permission or knowledge !!! {#emotions_dlg.thumbdown}

April, just curious: what about GMO foods makes them less nutritious?

The biggest problem is the patents being allowed for GMO seeds. Seeds to grow food should not be patented. Monsanto should not be allowed to sue farmers for patent infringement just because they lived next door to someone using the patented seed and bee's and other pollinators spread the genetics to a neighbors plants that didn't buy the seed. They are cross pollinating with non GMO plants and spreading their GMO status. I think it's a legit concern that in the future we could be at the mercy of GMO patent owners for seeds to grow food.

Buy organic and/or from local farmers who are not GMO. Buy from a market that will not sell GMO. Everything that I buy at the market where I shop is non gmo, including things like flour and sugar. Everything is labeled non.gmo. I buy chicken that is free range and has been fed with non gmo feed. Bread made with non gmo flour. Pop made with non gmo sugar. Etc. There are ways to avoid it, but you're not going to avoid it in your local mainstream supermarket.

VCamp, GMOs also alter the genetics to make produce that are resistant to pests (result: no pesticides), last longer after harvesting (longer shelf life at home), produce lower fat in animals, produce animals that are resistant to viruses and bacteria, and produce fruits without seeds (the seedless grapes and watermelons we all love).

I'm not saying I'm pro-GMO, but that's the other side of the coin.

Yes,agreed that there are other aspects to consider. We all will have to draw our own conclusions & make the best decisions we can for ourselves.

HonnyBrown, I am definitely not an expert here but all I know is that most of the fruits and vegetables I have been getting are void of any taste for the most part. So, I dont see them being nutritional, maybe they are but I dont see it. Just my experience. I dont particularly like the thought of our food being modified, its not natural. I also dont think they are really enriching the soil with the minerals that it needs. With that being said, it doesnt stop me from buying them every week nor do I go around asking if they are gmo or not. I do in some cases when I am being more mindful but for the most part, I just do my best. I dont read up on it as much as I should because sometimes, good or bad, I just dont want to know. It makes me crazy. If I had a yard, I would be growing my own garden.

I will not eat anything if I know it contains GMOs. Unfortunately, big business and our government do not want us to have that choice. We have a right to know what's in the foods we eat. But our government does not think so. And I hasten to add it matters not which party is in party, they are both the same on this.

If you make the decision that you want to avoid GMO products without getting too overwhelmed the easiest way is to start by looking for non GMO labeled products of the biggest commodities that being corn, soy and canola. Admittedly those items are in a lot of products. But if you avoid packaged foods and buy oils and corn products that are not GMO you've made a start.

Thanks, Jax Mom. I do buy non-gmo when I see it. I will always choose it. I just dont always look for it but am more and more. I think sometimes it is a challenge. I also take my mom shopping and she just buys whatever so it helps me from going crazy with all this stuff. I find food shopping to be a chore anymore.

I haven't made a final decision. But plants have always been patentable. Contrary to what some say, GM seeds are not the only seeds with Intellectual Property Rights. Almost all conventional (non-GM) and organic hybrid seeds are patented and cannot be saved for use in the next planting season. I would like so see some scientific studies on gmo fruits and veggies. Not anecdotal .
