Freezing Cookies-Best Method?

Planning on making cookies today and would like to freeze them so they will still be fresh when given as a gift. Do they need to be layed out flat or could I just pile them up in a container such as Lock N Lock. Believe it or not, I have never froze cookies before and need advise, thanks
