Feedback regarding electric stovetops, please.

I'll be moving from a home with a gas stove to a home with an electric stove.  I had one years ago and wasn't crazy about it, but I'm assuming they've improved since then.

I'd really appreciate advice on what brands or styles to look for and which to avoid.  I'd like to hear about your experiences before I start Googling.

Thank you.

@house_cat   Is it possible for you to have a gas line installed and get an electric oven/gas burner stove.  I love an electric oven but I do not like an electric cooktop.  That is JMHO.  I have a pretty pricy one and wish the salesman who sold it to me had not come to work that day.  I find the temperature harder to control than the older coil electric burners in the past.  Much, much harder to control than gas. That's my opinion and I am sure others will be different.

@house_cat I've always thought gas was the only way to go however since we had a new home built without a choice on appliances we had electric glass stove top installed, would never go back to gas. You have to keep on top of keeping the glass clean i.e. removing any burn spots, but having a smooth top available as extra space is worth it. We have a lot of counter space but still appreciate an extra flat surface for hot items. Also it is easy to control temps on electric unlike before.

I was also going to ask if it were possible to run a gas line. We had an electric stove, while I truly gave it a chance, I despised it. We ended up having a gas line installed and replaced the appliance. We have 2 residences, the other one has a dual fuel range (gas stove/electric oven).

i really like the control of the temperature with gas stove.  I also like the ability of using any cookware on the gas.  While the smooth finish electric wasn't difficult to clean, I find the gas grates much easier to keep clean.

Love, Love, Love a gas stove. It makes me feel like i´m a chef. Living in Sunrise Florida I would give a little laugh when there was a hurricane and the electricity went out. My gas stove was on.

For some reason I do prefer a gas stove.  Even here in Georgia we have a gas stove.  My sisters always had electric stoves so one day my 3 year old nephew came by and i was cooking. He was so facinated with the flames because he had never seen a gas stove before, i had to explain to him what it was.

@house_cat  I don´t know if this is correct but it takes forever for a pot of water to boil on an electric stove.

P.S.  Forgot that you cannot use a cast iron fry pan or any cast iron or Corning ware or any of the pyroceramic cookware on a glass-top range.  You also have to take special care if you use Le Creuset on your glass-top range.  You cannot slide such items across the glass-top range.

@house_cat  I don´t know about those with the coil but I´ve seen the glass top with scratches and marks that won´t come off.

Also with the glass top I always feel as if the burner will suffocate if the pot is too heavy. That´s just me lol

Re: Feedback regarding electric stovetops, please.

This is the honest to God truth.....

I have NEVER seen an electric stove until I moved here 7 yrs ago.  Always had gas, all my friends, family, etc., have gas stoves.

The first week I lived here, I kept setting off the fire alarm inside & outside in the hallways.  I kept burning up everything! icon_exclaim.gifI CANNOT judge the heat no matter what setting the knobs says.  Same w/the oven.  Me thinks an electric oven is hotter than gas ovens.

I am use to seeing FLAMES.  That I can judge heat settings.

So I now have marble burner covers on top of the stove - more storage space & I store my pots & pans inside the oven.  I bought a countertop convection oven.

My saving grace was.....I was NOT the only one who was setting off the fire alarms either.  They also are now the proud owners of countertop convection ovens.

@Sage04      And you have to take the pot OFF the burner to stop it from boiling over........

Re: Feedback regarding electric stovetops, please.

I wouldn't have a gas stove if you paid me.  I am fire phobic and will not even use candles.  I just got used to the settings on my glass cooktop and can even tell DH turn it down to blank o'clock.  That way I don't have to memorize the numbers on the dial or have him not have his glasses on.  I once spilled a jar of freezer jam on the cooktop and the mess was caught by the raised edge.  It would have been a nighmare to clean gas burners.
