@ECBG  I don't know if they are the same, but I've seen similar kits at Sam's and Costco.  I'm glad you are eating greens.  Fresh greens and salads are a standard daily routine and makes me feel like my body hums.  Enjoy!

@phoenixbrdThank you.  I grew up on a farm surrounded by the Blue Ridge Parkway and we had a giant garden.  I have always loved salads since I was small.Smiley Happy

@ECBGThe Blue Ridge Parkway....one of the most beautiful parts of our country.  And so lucky to have been a farm girl with fresh greens from the garden. I had horses too when I was young, such a sense of freedom.   Such great roots!

@ECBG I used to eat raw kale, but I have found that it might not be a good idea. There are many opinions out there that raw kale can block nutrients or is actually poisonous when in a raw state. I don't know if this is true, but my neighbor's dad said he always steams it first, but he didn't know why. I would like to know for sure, because I grow many kinds of kale.

Raw kale ‘poisonous?’

Took 2 seconds & Googled the origins of this false story.

Apparently, there was o.n.e. viral crazy story back in 2015.

Hard to believe it’s still making the rounds.

In a nutshell....no.

Raw kale is not poisonous.

There would be a zillion plant-based people dropping like flies, if so.

All dark leafy greens do contain a chemical to prevent being eaten by animals. And if you eat only one type , there is a toxic effect but in very minute amounts. You need to mix all your greens and not just concentrate on one type. Also spinach actually is better steamed for just a few seconds; seems like the nutrients are released and used easier. I have a mixture of many greens , frozen  in zip bags and use a handful of a few for my morning smoothies. I went thru 5 months of chemo in 2012 and would make myself  super green smoothies every morning and I actually didn't go thru as a horrendous ordeal as alot of my cancer sisters did. And my chemo was very strong. It was no joy ride but I truly believe those smoothies helped alot. And I love these greens in salads and then cooked too.

@wagirl

What is this chemical? And why is it toxic?

Animals love greens....most any gardener on Earth will attest to that.

I agree different greens need to be mixed for a different

nutritional profile, but not because they are “toxic.”

@sidsmom, when you googled kale did you happen to see if it were safe for dogs?  My pup loves greens, but I have never bought kale.

@sidsmom--take it easy-----if eaten in extreme amounts, kale can interfere with the thyroid and a couple other functions too. and there are many plants that animals won't eat because they have a chemical in them to keep them away.

Refuting the ridiculous claim of “raw kale is poisonous”

warrants a ‘take it easy’ response, but yet people are keeling

over by not eating enough kale...not a dog, but people.

”kale is poisonous” is along the same lines as

‘drinking too much water is dangerous’ and

‘everyone needs to add fat to their diet’

I see these comments in our small-forum-bubble every single day.

Unfortunately people remember the ridiculous stuff...as shown w/ this

2015 comment of kale. Not to throw the baby out with the bathwater,

my statements could be true for the micro-extremely-few

out there but that’s what people won’t remember.

I hate the fear mongering when it’s not warranted.
