I slice my bread on my meat slicer and then put in plastic bread bags and store in the freezer and then take it out as I need it. I don't like breads stored in completely air tight containers like lock n lock or tupperware. If it's something we will eat within a day or so I store it cut side down and loosely wrapped with wax paper.

Re: Does keeping your bread in a lock and lock keep it fresher longer?

I have the lock n lock bread keeper, but haven't used it to store bread in many years.  As a single person, I just couldn't use a loaf fast enough, even with the lock n lock.

Now, I store my bread in the freezer, and toast it as I need it - a loaf lasts for weeks that way, for me.

If you use 1-2 slices of bread per day, and are careful about the bread's sell-by date, you'll probably be fine with the lock n lock.  If it doesn't work well for you, you can always use it to store other stuff - I buy oatmeal in bulk, and store it in my bread keeper ;-)

I store a minimum of two loaves of various types of sliced breads upright,  wrapper loosly sealed , in the fridge. I don't like moisture to build up when completely sealed, especially when there are nuts, whole grains, etc.  If I have odds and ends of bread slices, I wrap them in waxed paper.   I've found that sealing them completely causes moisture to build up. I'm guessing it's because when I first buy them and the temp. difference from the supermarket to warm car to fridge is very great = moisture.

I don't know that lock n lock will keep it longer.  I out bread right in the freezer and take out slices as needed.  It takes maybe a 1/2 hr to defrost.

Thanks Everyone:

I have put it in the freezer but it seems to dry out and is never as good as not in the freezer.   I grew up with bread in the freezer.  My brother worked in a grocery store. and all the bread that came in smashed he got for 10cents.

Keeping bread in lock 'n lock won't keep it from molding but keeping it very cool will slow it down.   This time of year,  I keep baked goods in some big tin popcorn cans in my attached garage.   It's very cold out there.

I read recently that bread should not be sealed airtight.  I have tried putting it in my big lock & lock and just seal 2 sides.  Can't really tell a difference.  I, too, wish I had a solution.

@Kachina that don't work in Florida.  I guess I will have to settle for fridge or eat a lot faster.

Wouldn't it be great if stores sold bread by the half loaf?I would buy that even though there are two of us because we like our bread really fresh.
