Does anyone else here use a grain mill?

I've heard a lot about the benefits of fresh milled flour and bought myself a grain mill for Christmas.  I can't start using it until my wheatberry order arrives in mid-January.  I'm wondering if anyone here has experience milling their own flour. I understand there's quite a substantial learning curve.

I have used my Vitamix to do almond flour and I think polenta (corn). I have never used something like this.

I do not use one, but then I'm not as experienced a cook as you @house_cat .

At any rate, I haven't seen you in quite some time and just wanted to stop by and say hello.  I hope you are doing well!

Good luck with your new mill.

I never used a grain mill.  I have milled rice in my Vitamix a few times to make flour, but no longer do.

Flour is inexpensive and too much trouble for me to bother with.

It's sounds interesting though.  What grains do you plan to mill?

Give you credit for making your life hard when it doesn't have to be. I used to do "crazy" things like this. But, you can find great grains and other without having to spend precious time. Good luck & enjoy the endeavor.

I’ve heard about the health benefits of fresh milled flours and breads but I don’t have any experience with milling the flour myself although I’ve considered it in the past
Someone told me about bread beckers in Ga
I think they teach courses on it all but I’m not sure I never followed through on the idea since we just don’t eat much bread
I’m not even sure where in Ga they are located

@house_cat  It sounds intriguing!  I wish I had more room for stuff like this.

We use the VitaMix grain grinder to make different flours. We bake a lot so it is a frequently used small appliance. Oats, nuts, rice have all been made into flours along with purchasing regular AP flour.

@Citrine1

Thank you for the confidence, but this is something with which I have ZERO experience.  If it turns out to be a fiasco, it won't be my first!

@Carmie

I'm starting with hard white wheatberries, which are recommended for bread baking.  They are said to have a milder flavor and texture than other wheatberries, more similar to the bread flour I'm used to using.

@Shihtzursqmom

There are hundreds of tutorials on YouTube, and Bread Beckers is one of the best.

I'm going to get my berries through Azure Standard, which is a bulk supplier that ships from Oregon to multiple pick up points around the country.  I live in Asheville NC and they drop off once a month, so I have to wait until mid-January.

Bread Beckers has a giant warehouse and store in Woodstock, Georgia, near Atlanta, which is about 2-3 hours from me.  DH and I are planning a visit in the upcoming weeks.

In any case, it won't be the first time I've tried something that turned out to be a folly đź¤·â€Ťâ™€ď¸Ź

I have used my Vitamix a few times for grinding grains----worked very well. Was wondering---how would you store that flour? Does it need to be in the freezer or just in a dark pantry? I could google that -----I suppose.
