Re: Do you use your soup tureen?

As a collector of a couple of patterns of Pfaltzgraff, and a number of Temp-tations patterns, I have at least a half dozen different soup tureens. I have used each of them.

My husband and I like home made soups, so I make them often in the fall and winter months. Sometimes it seems like a bit of trouble to get out a tureen, but I love to set a nice table, and it does look nice. No one has to get up to get another bowl of soup, either.

I would say that when I decide to downsize on all the dinnerware/cookware, they might be some of the first things to go, but I will try to keep at least one. Preferably one that goes with the dish sets I like to use in the colder weather, as that is when we would use it most.

I have also used them as a punch bowl. We don't have occasion to make punch very often, but it is a good way to use one item for different things.

Re: Do you use your soup tureen?

I had one years ago. It was shaped like a pumpkin. It was really pretty, but we never put soup in it! It turns out we like really hot soup, so we leave the soup on the stove.

The tureen was pretty to look at and made a nice table decoration. But when we downsized, it didn't make the cut.

Re: Do you use your soup tureen?

I'm 59. I've never owned one and don't have any plans to buy one.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

I have two and I do use them.  I often make homemade soup for company.  I will put the soup tureen on the table along with a green salad and garlic/cheese bread to complete the dinner.

Re: Do you use your soup tureen?

This topic comes at the perfect time for me.  I have the Temptations Pumpkin tureen in my cart and I just can't bring myself to push the 'buy' button.  I love the look and it so fits in with my kitchen/dining room decor, but the 'will I use it' keeps nagging at me.  I have a nice covered round tureen type dish from the long discontinued Lidia Bastianich collection and it sits on the counter with granola bars, 100 calorie packs of nuts and other snacks.  Handy and pretty for sure, and I like it a lot, but I think I've only used it once for its intended purpose and it was for a pasta dish. Even though I make a big pot of soup at least once a week in fall/winter.

I'm still mulling, but in the spirit of paring down for what is actually used, I'm getting farther and farther away from pushing that magic button.

I do have a soup tureen but the ladle broke years ago. On rare occasion I use it but not very often, and I would not spend money to buy one, unless I wanted it as a decoration. I inherited mine from my Mom.

Even Campbell Soup Company gave away its soup tureen collection.  It was housed for years in a museum at company HQ in Camden, NJ.  In 1997, it was sent to Winterthur in Wilmington, DE.

Re: Do you use your soup tureen?

I had a soup tureen many years ago and ended up giving it to a friend of mine.  I am not one to have a lot of nick nacks and I hated dusting it month after month.  Now, granted this was when I had a smaller house.

Now that I have  a larger home, I still remember that I had to give my (handmade) soup tureen away.  It does keep me from giving in to the urge to buy a pumpkin related set.  (QVC & Sur la Table) have great ones out this season.

Re: Do you use your soup tureen?

I have a beautiful white tureen that my daughter sent me as a Christmas gift while she was living in Europe. I keep it in my china cabinet, and no, it has never been used.
