We never cooked and ate like this on Sunday, but since my folks have no one else in the world, we feel obligated to give them some sense of home and tradition. When they're gone I won't be doing this anymore. I'd much rather have a nap on a Sunday afternoon than cook dinner.
It's really nice to read about someone who cares so much for her parents.

We have elaborate breakfasts, lunches, or dinners on the weekends. We tend to keep it simple during the week due to work/school schedules.

I stopped doing Sunday dinners when my children left home 25 years ago. Now Sundays are one of our eating out days. I think the main reasons we didn't eat out on Sundays years ago was due to the the lack of restaurants in our area and the expense of feeding a larger family at a restaurant.

DH does most of the cooking, and yes, he does a big Sunday dinner. Sometimes in the summer it's a barbecue.
I grew up with the special Sunday dinner something like salad, roast, potatoes, vegetables dessert in the dining room.

In my MIL's house Sunday dinner was always macaroni and meatballs served at 1PM. In my own mother's house Sunday dinner was more toward evening (if not evening itself) and although it was often macaroni and meatballs, it could just as often be a roast of some kind served with potatoes and a veggie.
Hubby and I eat when we're hungry. If we have a late breakfast we'll skip lunch and I'll serve dinner around 5 but those dinners are no more elaborate than any other normal evening and during the summer months, it's likely to be less elaborate as we often grill and have a small evening meal on the deck.

I have always made a special breakfast on Sunday morning instead of an elaborate dinner. It might be quiche or French toast or smoked salmon scrambled eggs, etc. Tomorrow it is homemade scones and bowl of fresh berries (blueberries, raspberries, boysenberries) with Greek yogurt and drizzle of honey.

While we don't eat earlier in the afternoon, I DO tend to make more elaborate (or time consuming) meals on the weekends. I have a captive audience with DH and children all home at the exact same time. ![]()

A long time ago when my husband was alive and my girls were young, I'd make 'Sunday Dinners".
That's what they used to do in the old days when I was growing up. Those that wanted to went to church then we ate at around 1 or 2 in the afternoon.
Those were the days when people didn't work on Sundays. These days for most families Sunday is treated like any other day, unfortunately.
I guess most people need the money and everything is open on Sunday.
Who remembers when Sunday's everything was closed? Anybody remember that?

Growing up we had a big meal at 2pm on Sunday's. My sister and I went to church with my father, then to visit his parents while my mother cooked. The tradition ended once we grew up and weren't home on Sunday's.
