Re: Do you have a fool-proof method for soft-boiled eggs?

I wound up ordering this one.. not one of the cheapest, but it had good reviews and features that I wanted. I hope I didn't overspend on it.

There once were little pans to make them in on the stove. You might want to check your local market for one. You might be surprised. Test for the doneness you want with a fork. They tasted great.

My husband can always make the PERFECT soft-boiled egg. I have asked him how and this is what I remember him telling me.

Fill pot with water to cover the eggs.

Bring to a rolling boil.

Turn flame off.

Cover pot.

Set timer for 3 minutes.

Done!

Are you sure that's for eggs added to already boiling water? I always thought the three minute rule was when you put eggs in cold water, bring to the boil and then start the timer one they are boiling.

Clover, perhaps I didn't write clear instructions. You are right, this method is for bringing the water and eggs to a rolling boil--not adding eggs to boiling water.

For some reason, I can't get the link to work.

Go to Williams-Sonoma Egg-Perfect Egg Timer. There's a pic of the timer in a pot of eggs. You can see the markings on the timer: hard, medium, and soft. (The eggs in the pot are cooked to medium.) You just put the eggs and the timer in a pot of water, turn on the burner, and let the water heat to the doneness you want of the eggs. Works every time.

I got it on Amazon using a name search without WS in the search.

Thank You!

You're very welcome! I've used this for years and given one to each of my DILs. We all love it. Cheap, too!

Re: Do you have a fool-proof method for soft-boiled eggs?

I saw the same America's Test Kitchen episode as lenapecci & Yahooey did. As mentioned, ATK said that they went through ONE THOUSAND eggs to perfect a technique for the perfect soft boiled egg....so I wrote it down & filed it away, but haven't tried it yet.

They said it works perfectly whether you're making just one egg, or more.

Here:

ATK's Perfect Soft Boiled Egg Technique

1. Use large eggs

2. In a medium saucepan, heat 1/2 inch water to boil

3. Add egg(s), cover w/ lid

4. Cook exactly 6.5 minutes.

5. rinse w/ cold water for 30 seconds

They even had a little gizmo that took the top of the egg off, like this:

Rosle Egg Topper/Cutter

Amazing number of methods! I've used most of them. Now I have one of those little, very inexpensive egg cookers, and I have to say, it really does turn out consistent results with absolutely no effort. And for some reason, my hard boiled eggs are no longer hard to peel.

Re: Do you have a fool-proof method for soft-boiled eggs?

I love eggs.

I like my soft cooked eggs almost to the medium stage. I like the yolk a little soft, and the white done.

I decided to make soft cooked eggs today.

I was surprised that the ATK added the eggs to boiling water. They mentioned that the small amount of water can return to a boil quicker, compared to having a large amount of water. I think it is just easier to start with cold eggs and cold water.

I put the cold eggs in a small saucepan and cover with cold tap water. (About an inch above the eggs.) Put on the burner and turn the heat to high. Watch for the water to just come to a full boil. It was simmering a little, then a couple big bubbles. At that point I cover the pan with a lid and remove from the burner. I set the timer for 5 minutes. Then, I poured out most of the hot water and started filling with cold tap water. Then poured out again, then filled again. This is less than a 30 second rinse, I would say. Then removed the eggs and cut off the tops with a butter knife. Then used a spoon to scoop the eggs out of the shell. Just like I like them! If someone wanted the yolks more liquid, I would just reduce the time.

This was my finished product this morning. The first picture is right after cutting off the tops. The 2nd picture is removed from the shells with salt & pepper added.
