Re: Do you clean your own house?

As soon as I see anything about 'privacy' I find myself (sometimes saying out loud), "Yes, yes. That's me!"

I have so many personal and business papers in boxes and boxes (right now the boxes fill the dining room table).

I need to have someone come into my house, organize it and get rid of more than 1/2 of the stuff in it. (There are many widows just like me).

I even joined Angie's List and was like, "OK now I'll find someone". Then I read where someone hired a company and jewelry was stolen.

Angie commented that the person was punished by the law, but my response is, "So what!"

So, I'm leary about trusting anyone to come in here, look at my papers.

If your business papers are the main issue, could you have someone come in and work while you are present and just not clean your "office" room or whatever room your papers are in? When I had someone years ago, we did not have them clean our home office. Since then I have considerably more jewelry (thanks to QVC) so now I would be concerned about that. I could not move it every time she/they would come to work. Guess I will struggle along until I can no longer do it. Then I will have to get someone.

Re: Do you clean your own house?

We have a fairly large house and even when I was more physically able, I couldn't handle it all. But we DO like having plenty of room.

The cleaning lady does all the common areas, both hallways, the stairs, his bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, etc. She does all the heavy-duty scrubby stuff that I cannot do, the wood polishing, etc.

She doesn't go into any of the four bedrooms or my big office upstairs. The husband and I split the bdrms and keep them fairly well. I do the master suite. My office - well, it needs help so sometimes I hire somebody to help me knock it out. It's a pretty huge room with 4 gigantic windows and a balcony.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, on this board, that some would be so disgusted that some of us have help.

It doesn't disgust me, that's for sure. I'm envious, as a matter of fact. My house is only 1300 sq. feet, but it has 2 1/2 bathrooms and of course a kitchen. I can't do it all in one day anymore, which means I spread it out. By the time I finish the last bathroom, the first one needs cleaning again.

Re: Do you clean your own house?

Oh, I know, Housecat. I hope you didn't think I meant that. There are just a very few who acted like those of us who have help are somehow flawed or beneath them.

It is what it is. Smiley Happy I was getting help even before I needed it and that's ok because it's my money and my house.

It's like the painting of the Golden Gate Bridge (love that story) - every time you finish one thing it's time to do another thing again. ha!

Re: Do you clean your own house?

I know, chickenbutt, that there are always people on the forum who are less than diplomatic in how they state their opinions. That will never change.

I had a cleaning service for a couple of years when I first moved to California from New York. It seemed I had a revolving door for out of town guests, two teenagers and a full time job. It was a godsend and I loved having them come every two weeks. We eventually gave that up for financial reasons, but I'd be very happy to have someone come once in a while to do the heavy cleaning.

My mom has been married 60 years and never wanted a housekeeper. She is extremely private and feels invaded when someone is in her house. I respect that, but she is 89 years old now and Dad is 91. They can't keep their apartment clean and I don't have the energy to clean it for them. Every time she gets the reminder call that the maids are coming the next day, she has a little tantrum over it. I think because her eyesight is fading and my dad is legally blind, they don't see the mess they create.

Re: Do you clean your own house?

Yes, as DH is retired & I am semi-retired. The one chore I HATE the most is dusting & would turn that over to a cleaning service in a heartbeat if I could. Actually enjoy cleaning the bathroom & don't understand why everyone hates it so much. In all fairness, we have a small one-story home, so it's not hard to keep up with. I do a little every day & make sure clutter is picked up every day B4 we go to bed. Also never wake up to a sink full of dirty dishes.

The same people who will be quick to say they can spend their money any way they please on expensive purses , jewelry or anything else will be the first ones to jump all over me because I have hired someone to help me around the house. From that i can only figure that right to spend your money any way you please only applies to those who are approved by the BB police - everyone else is excluded.

Re: Do you clean your own house?

Ack!! I hope no one thought I meant people who used cleaning services houses were disgusting. In my instance, these are beach rentals. People spend a week or two and when they leave, my neighbors have cleaning services come in and wipe up the sinks, sweep the floor and boom they're gone in 20 mins.

It takes us every bit of four hours to completely clean the houses. I clean and disinfect bathrooms, showers, wash all curtains, all bedding (mattress pads and coverlets) wipe down doors, wash all windows and sills, completely wipe down kitchen cabinets inside and out, counters, fridge inside and out, sweep, then vacuum and then wash floors including under beds, tables, and other furniture (no carpeting). Slipcovers get washed and hung out to dry in the sun along with bedding and curtains. I have backups if weather isn't good. The bathmat gets tossed and renters always get a brand new one.

Now which place would you rather spend a week at, the one that was cleaned in less than a half hour or one that had a spring cleaning in between renters?

My idea of a perfect life would be to have Hazel living with us!

Excuse me, but you are always accusing people of "frittering away" their money. NOW you are miffed when that concept is applied to you? That is RICH!
