Do You Still Do Congealed Salads?

My first congealed salad was when I was about 14 (we didn't do them at my house).  It was cherry jello with fruit coctail on a lettuce leaf with a little grated cheddar.  It was ok.

The next one I tried was a light green that appeared to be lime jello with cottage cheese.  That was where I stopped.  I really don't care for lime except key lime pie.

These were hugely popular with my grandmother and my mom when I was growing up!  We ate tomato and apricot aspic too!  I was surprised to find, when I got older and out in the "real" world, these WERE NOT popular menu items! Smiley Happy!

The name you called it makes me gag.  We called them molded gelatine salads.  I like jello but I don't want anything else in it.  I have to make one once a year at Thanksgiving cuz my husband's mother used to make it.

Not congealed..........but my "first" mother-in-law used to coat a canned pear half with cream cheese, and then press halved black grapes into the cheese.  Looked like a hand grenade..........

"Congealed" does not sound appetizing at all.  Yes I made jello back when I first got married but not for many, many years.

At the holidays we had one that I still like today.  It's lime jello with crushed pineapple, cream cheese, whipping cream, a little sugar and vanilla.

Can't stand fruit cocktail stuff.  Utah seems to be the capital of jello salads and funeral potatoes.

@FastDogWalker2 Food habits are always interesting to me.

I could never handle tomato aspic.  It appeared to be thickened V 8 just which I loved with pepper, I just couldn't handle the thickness of an aspic.

I could live on tomatoes.  Often, as a child, I'd have to swish with buttermilk because the tomato acid would break out the inside of my mouth.

Re: Do You Still Do Congealed Salads?

I have made this recipe that was ripped from am old Women's Day magazine:

4 3-oz boxes pineapple Jello

2 cups boiling water

2 13.5-oz cans coconut milk

1 1/2 cups mini marshmallows

15-oz can mandarin orange segments, drained and halved

10-oz jar maraschino cherries, drained and halved

Stir Jello into boiling water to dissolve in big bowl.  Stir in 1/2 cup cold water and coconut milk.  Refrigerate for 1 hour until slightly set.

Spray mold pan with cooking spray.  Whisk Jello mixture to blend and fold in Marshmallows, oranges, and cherries.  Pour into mold and refrigerate 4 hours to set.  Invert onto plate just before serving.
