I just got done cleaning my spice cabinet area. I am pitching expired spices, but cannot find an expiration date on any of the Penzy spice bottles. Am I just not seeing it or do they not put a date on their spices? By the way, looks like I'll be waiting for the next time I see spices on sale. A lot of mine were expired. I already went through one shelf of canned goods and pitched some that had expired. My New Year's resolutions---pitch outdated spices and canned goods---- and I'm actually doing them!!!

Yes, it is printed at the top of the bottle near the lid.

yes @wismiss ......the dates are stamped directly on the glass towards the top of the container, above the label.

Thanks, Sunshine45 and blackhole 99. I looked and looked and looked and could not find it. Guess my eyes are tired or maybe it's the cold I have.

could you have purchased an empty bottle and then purchased a bag of spice instead of a jar to go in it?

@wismiss I never thought to check for an expiration date, I just go by how the spice appears/smells. I am not finding any dates on my larger bottles but the small ones all seem to have them.

That's what I found, too, Tucsongal2. The tall bottles did not have an expiration date. Even after I emptied the contents and washed out the bottle there was not a date to be seen. And, some of the small bottles had an expiration date, but some of them just had some kind of code with maybe the time they were packed. example, 28593 8:03. So, I just threw them out. I made a list of the more common ones I need to replace but the less common ones won't be replaced unless a recipe calls for them.

Do dry spices go "Bad"? I too use the sniff test. If it Looks okay and after a shake if it smells potent I'll use it. If the scent is lacking out it goes. If you have favourite spices you use frequently Save the small spice bottles to refill from a larger bulk bag.

No, spices don't go bad though they can lose their strength or potency. I never discard expired spices unless they are really ancient. They're just too expensive to replace frequently. If they still have a fragrance I find they'll still work well. If I'm concerned that a given herb or spice may have lost some of its zip, I'll simply use somewhat more than the recipe calls for. Frankly I suspect 98 out of 100 people would never know if a recipe was made using expired spices. However I can why companies that sell spices encourage you to keep replacing expired spices - more profit for them.
