Thank you for your logical response - it helps me to see the situation from another perspective. I can't say, though, that I would ever be comfortable with your system.... but that's okay :-)
If there's one thing I've learned it's to do what works - as long as it doesn't harm you or anyone else and it certainly doesn't.

I wash some things by hand. I wash pots and pans and things not appropriate for a dishwhasher.
Others I put in the dishwasher after rinsing them. I usually wait until I have a full load to wash them.
Growing up, my mother had us washing dishes every night. We never left any dirty dishes in the sink. We washed, dried, and put away every day.

I sometimes leave a pan or 2 to soak overnight in the sink after a party...but dishes are washed after the meal...

I wash dishes after I eat. I don't own enough "china" to fill a dishwasher.

I live alone and eat out often even though I love to cook. I rinse dishes and put in dishwasher to run when full. I usually run it a couple times of week. I do not put pans, knives or cooking utensils in the dishwasher so I usually wash those few things by hand every couple of days (depending on how much I have) and let them air dry.

Unfortunately @house_cat I think the author of this article means exactly what she said. When I first saw this topic I thought "Why, that's just common sense; who would need to be told that?" Then I remembered that I actually know people like this. Sad to admit, but I'm even related to a couple of them. He he, have you noticed these types are prone to say that the stuff is just "soaking." Really? For a week? Disgusting.

I DO know many who only run it once a week because it's not filled until then. Each person who does this is single and lives alone. They rinse the dishes, cutlery, glasses, etc and then place in the dishwasher. Pots and pans that they may need to cook with, however, they'll wash by hand.
I've NEVER smelled anything bad. Wish I could say that about other homes I've been to.....

I think that makes sense @SahmIam, if it's done that way. Particularly for one living alone.
