She was an okay cook but she was great at signing her signature on the credit card receipt at the restaurant.

My mother was an excellent cook. She made bread, custards, jellies, pickles, and all types of home canned vegetables. She also baked pies, cakes, cookies, etc.
She made goulash, soups, stews, chili, pork chops, roast beef, chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy.
Some of my fondest memories are of her home made bread, fresh and warm from the oven, with butter and/or home made jelly.
I miss her so much

Isn't it the truth Bridegal, and what makes it so frustrating. Anyone can get a recipe, but it is spending time with the "cook" and watching and learning that really makes the food special. My mom was English, she knew NOTHING about fried chicken, but she married a Kansas man, and after the war when they moved back, she learned how to cook some pretty awesome fried chicken from my dad's step-mom ( "Grandma" to me).
My mom never had a written recipe for her pastry crust, she said it was all by feel. So I watched and she would "guess-timate" amounts for me, but it really was an art... she just knew how much of what she needed to use to make it come out perfect everytime. If for some reason her crust came out a bit tough (in her opinion, to most it would still be a wonderful crust) she would know she added too much of this, or not enough of that. I took her cooking for granted.

My mother made the best swiss steak too. She would brown cube steaks, then pour a can of stewed tomatoes over them, put a lid on the skillet, turn the stove to simmer setting, and let them cook for an or or so. They were so tender you didn't need a knife.. Served with masked potatoes and corn, that was my favorite meal as a child and still today. I fix it often and always thank of my mom when I do. She's been gone since Sept. 2012, and I miss her every day... She also made the best potato salad I've ever eaten..I just can't seem to get it just like hers. She was a very good cook.

Topped with a butter cream frosting that had the cherries and walnuts in it also .This was back in the 40's To this day I still remember the wonderful taste of it .
My grandma made this except with pecans...it is still one we love to make today!!!

She has so many "signature" items. My mom was a fantastic cook and baker. She doesn't do as much anymore, but she still makes the best pie crust ever, and has some signature cakes and the very best carrot bars!!!
