Is a restaurant cafeteria like a school or hospital cafeteria?

@lulu1

I was referring to retail cafeterias. Smiley Happy

 I've been to corporate cafeterias, hospital cafeterias and school cafeterias. I'm not familiar with retail cafeterias, Ponderosa Steak House would be the closest thing to a cafeteria I remember.

Growing up across the river from Manhattan , I had so many places to eat all different foods.  My favorite cafeteria was Horn and Hardart.  You would put your money in a slot, open the glass door and get your sandwich, pie or whatever.  The excitement as a young girl to pick out my food from such a selection was a thrill!  I also loved going to Woolworth's and having a piece of pie, delicious.

We have plenty of diners and I always enjoy going to them, all different food and plenty of it!!!!!

@spiderw Horn & Hardart had the best date nut bread with cream cheese!  That's what I would always get when on the rare occassion we traveled into Mahattan.

My husbands grandfather used to work there.  He never knew him though, he passed away before he was born.

My mother-in-law worked in the executive offices for Woolworth,  she was an executive secretary for the hosiery buyer.

I'm glad you also have fond memories of Horn and Hardart!  I love date and nut bread with cream cheese and I'm sure it was delicious!  It must have been a positive experience for your mother-in-law working at Woolworth's.  The stores were many and popular at the time and I loved shopping at them.  We had one in the city I grew up at and the big Woolworth's at Manhattan was my favorite.  I enjoyed sitting at the counter having a piece of pie and coffee.  I miss a lot of stores which have closed and Woolworth's definitely among them.

Fun memories, thanks for sharing!

I didn't have a cafeteria in my town but when we went to Denver we would go to Furrs and it was fun to choose our food in the line.

I also fondly remember the Kings restaurants where you would phone in your order and it was delivered to the table. They had wonderful tuna frenchie sandwiches.

This area actually had 2 in the 60's and 70's, and they were always packed after church on Sundays.   The buildings have long been torn down.
