I've never done that, but when I run the dishes, there is rarely a spec of food debris on them. It's an older machine and I want it to last.

We clean our dishes before too and even as far as wiping ones with greasy things like salad dressing with a paper towel.  Would rather waste a paper towel than have gunk go down the drain or disposal.

Recently the forum had a check your dishwasher filter topic and found barely anything on mine.

It's 5yrs old and never checked it before and like you I want it to last.  And also not have to call the plumber out for a clog like we did years ago.

Someone mentioned using white vinegar as a cleaner.  That usually works for many cleaning jobs.  It's also safe, easy to buy and relatively cheap.  How about baking soda?  That also serves well as an all-purpose cleaner and deodorizer.  Would that be suitable for the dishwasher clean out?

You don't have to buy a special cleaner.  Using citric acid crystals will do the cleaning safely as well.  I just put the crystals in the dispenser or on the bottom of the dishwasher.  I use about 1 tablespoon.

I've never heard of those?! Where do you get them??

I use white vinegar.  Have been using this method for a very long time and I have no issues at all with my dishwasher, and it's an older one too.

Here's how to keep your dishwasher clean using a cup of white vinegar.
  • Pour one cup of white vinegar into a dishwasher-safe mug. ...
  • Place the mug upright on the top rack of your dishwasher and then close the door of the appliance.
  • Run the dishwasher on the normal cycle with hot water for extra sterilization.

I read an article years ago that recommended using powdered Tang to clean the dishwasher. That same article also mentioned using denture cleaning tabs for your shower head. I haven’t tried either of these myself, though.

@pdlinda  You put the white vinegar in a safe proof cup on the top shelf of your dishwasher.  Reason being is

The vinegar loosens soap scum, food particles and grease from the dishwasher's walls and racks and washes it down the drain. Once the cycle is complete, open the door and remove the mug.  **You should Never just pour white vinegar into your dishwasher or the pod tray**.

I use white vinegar I try to remember once a month but I'm often late.
