For just DH and myself, we serve ourselves from the pots/pans at the stove or countertop. If we have guests everything is put into serving bowls. I would not put a saucepan or skillet on the table, but casserole dishes, sure, why not.

We put things in serving dishes. If there are leftovers, they are often dishes that go back in the microwave--glass, porcelain, pottery, etc. Sometimes we get food from the stove but not often. Le Creuset comes to the table, and an All-Clad soup pot sometimes comes to the table. A braiser will too.
