Shortbread are easy to make and they can be decorated with colored sugar or sugared pre-bought decorations. They are always a hit. Another suggestion might be to make chocolate crinkle cookies.

I would suggest making something that hold well, and freezes well. Don't know what day of the month the event will be, but if you choose something that freezes well, you can bake ahead, or the people who receive can freeze if they need to to hold them till the holidays.
If trying a new cookie, I'd do a practice batch rather soon, so you can see how they taste, how long they hold and how well they freeze.

Anything homemade. Please none of those typical tube cookies from the store. People don't sign up for these things to get what they can pull from the grocery store.
I love a cranberry shortbread. You can do a short bread recipe and do different stir-ins like pecans, cranberries, blueberries, lemon zest, anything really!
