Could someone let me know if there's a "rule of thumb" on the difference in cooking time on a traditional oven vs. a convection oven?

I want to bake a pumpkin pie in my new oven and don't know what the time difference should be.

I just bought the Breville Smart Oven K374805 (from a different retailer).

Re: Convection Cooking Times

@timeless I haven't found that I need to change the time that I bake in my convection oven.

Mine does adjust the temperature down 25 degress.

I always set my timer a couple minutes short on baked goods, but most of them need close to the full minimum time.

Re: Convection Cooking Times

I don't bake anything like that using my convection mostly because I'm afraid I'll burn it. I agree with the other comment that the temp is adjusted down 25 degrees automatically but I swear when I do toasted cheese sandwiches they are done even before the temp I set the oven at is ready. So, I continue to use reg bake for cakes, cookies and pies.

@timeless

When you are roasting in a convection vs standard oven turn down the temp 25 degrees.

If you have controls for Bake & Convection you would use Bake for a pie.  Since it's a smaller contained unit in a counter top vs a normal range oven you'd still want to lower the temp 25 degrees from standard.

Re: Convection Cooking Times

@timeless , I looked up your oven.  I thought you were talking about a conventional  range.

I just bought a Ninja Foodi air fryer/roaster.  When I started using recipies I found online, I found the cooking times way off...way too much time.  I have started a cooking time chart which lists type of cooking, temp, length of cooking time and comments.  In the beginning, it was trial and error.  It is a learning curve.  I can now simply refer to the chart and off I go.

Good luck.  Come back and review your smart oven after a bit of use.

That's a good idea!  I'll do that.

When I bought my Instant Pot, I got a cooking time magnet that attaches to the side. I love it.

That's why I just like my regular toaster oven. I don't need to figure out what I'm doing. It's hard to find them anymore as they all have convection or air fryer features that i don't want or need.

@Razzy 7 , I found manufacturer cooking times too long.  That is where I started but now keep my own chart.  It takes the guesswork out of cooking.  With the price of roast pieces today, I don't want it ruined by overcooking.

My mom had a toaster oven before she got her Breville convection oven.  She loved it.

So when I asked why she wanted to get rid of the toaster for the convection when she already had a range, she said it has become too difficult for her to bend or kneel into the oven to keep it cleaned.

That reality hit me this year!  LoL

My range oven gets used a lot and no matter how I try, spill overs happen.  I HATE getting down on my knees and reaching into that oven to clean it.

So now I'm only going to cook in it for large recipe items- like big sheetpan dinners for instance.
