Colors, Patterns... how did you decide? Yellow Old World? Blue Polka Dot?

How did you decide on your pattern and color? I'm just starting out and first got OW yellow in one of the sets and also Sugar Pig and Measuring Spoon Chicken in the same. I ordered Polka Dot Blue in the soup and sandwich set. But I feel so undecided. Advice? Help?
