@qvc chick The easiest bang for the buck is the meatballs with chili sauce and grape jelly recipe in a slow cooker. Start in the morning on low, and they are ready by the end of the day, and you didn't have to do anything. Just stir every once in a while and maybe turn up at the end.

Easy Shrimp dip. Mix 8 ounces of cream cheese with a bottle of chili sauce. Add small shrimp. Serve with crackers.

Baked Brie in pastry. Use crescent roll. Looks fancy, tastes delicious.

Blanch small asparagus spears until crisp tender but with their texture--not soggy. Dry well and chill and wrap with a piece of prosciutto or thinly sliced ham.
Block of cream cheese with pepper jelly spread over. Or hot peach preserves and nuts, etc.
Personally I don't think you can improve on a small wheel of Brie, warmed and served with apple and pear slices and grapes, and good sesame cracker. Easy peasy!
Home made spinach dip is great too--serve with chips, crackers AND carrots cut into dipping pieces by cutting on the bias.
Candied pecans. Celery sticks stuffed with pimento cheese or Boursin cheese. ORGANIC celery tastes worlds better too!
Pita chips with hummus--sprinkle spices or herbs on top and drizzle some good olive oil--serve with an assortment of olives (and a little bowl for pits if need be!).

Two suggestions:
Cranberry/barbeque Smokies (or meatballs)
1 can whole cranberry sauce
1 cup Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce (in the barbeque sauce aisle)
2 packages Little Smokies (or small meatballs)
Heat in chafing dish or small crock pot on low
Bacon wrapped water chestnuts
2 cans whole water chestnuts, drained
Bacon, sliced in thirds (cut the number needed for the amount of water chestnuts)
1/2 to 3/4 cup brown sugar
Wrap water chestnuts with bacon and secure with toothpick
Place on foil lined baking sheet
Sprinkle liberally with brown sugar
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes at 375 degrees until bacon is crisp
(You can pre-fry the bacon; remove from pan while still a little limp)
Keep warm in chafing dish or crock pot

@camelot Harris Teeter in DC had asparagus for week of November 20th through the 28th (for Thanksgiving) at $1.79 per pound. So it is available in at least one supermarket chain.

aroc3435: Yes, it's most likely from Mexico. I live in California and it's out of season. I try to eat local, in season produce.
