Re: Chest Freezer Recommendations

If you do get a chest freezer, this is what I do. I buy gallon bottles of drinking water and keep in the freezer. If the power goes out, the frozen bottles will help keep the food. Also, you know that you have drinking water if needed.

SGH, I like the idea of water bottles! That would make the bottom of the freezer not so deep.

jaxs, thanks for the comparison, it puts things in perspective. Manually defrosting would give me a perfect way to keep the chest organized.

Get your flu shot...because I didn't.

Great idea. Also your freezer will not be running all the time if it's not full by putting the gallons size bottles in the freezer. We put them in the freezer when it's not full. I'm trying to get things used up in the freezer right now so we can defrost it. We have a huge 150 qt ice chest we fill up when we defrost the freezer & fill the freezer up in the refrigerator. Before we got our generator when we lost power we lost all the food in the freezer along with other damage from the ice storm when we lost power. When we filed a claim with the Ins. Co. we asked about the loss of everything in the freezer & they acted like it would not amount to much until we explained we have an upright freezer that was full. All we had to do was take pics to show them to get reimbursed.
