Can you keep regular sugar indefinitely?

I don't bake a lot like I used to. We are getting ready to bake a birthday cake for one of my sons and was wondering about the sugar. I know everything is okay, but what about sugar? Does it keep for a long time or should I buy new? I am talking about maybe I've had it a year.
