Re: Can someone describe what a sponge cake is like?

Usually yellow in color, contains lots of eggs and usually orange and lemon zest rinds for flavor.

A pound cake would be another different option.  I love pound cake topped with strawberries and whip cream!

My mom made sponge cakes when I was a kid.  She used a special pan, and they weren't anything like angelfood.  They were yellow and literally looked like a sponge.  I didn't care for them as they weren't real sweet nor were they iced.

Re: Can someone describe what a sponge cake is like?

My mom used to make a hot milk sponge cake; it was a little heavier than a regular cake, but oh goodness, was it ever good! She always frosted it with a chocolate frosting.

I have her recipe and, since Mom passed away a few years ago, when my BIL gets hungry for hot milk sponge cake, he'll ask me to make it for him. And I always frost mine with a chocolate frosting, too. We love that cake.

It really brings back good memories.

You described it the best.  I didn't care for it either.  I found it virtually tasteless and like you said not iced.  Sort of had the consistency of cotton, lol

Re: Can someone describe what a sponge cake is like?

There are tons of different types of sponge cakes. Most variations I have had, I have liked. Perhaps the one I think of the most is a Boston Cream Pie.

I don't think an Angel Food and a sponge cake are anything like each other.

It's true there are different kinds of sponges. I've had some dry holey ones that were horrible.

I think the vanilla sponge cake is kind of meh, but I love lemon or orange sponge cake.
