I was checking my spice shelf, and saw a can labeled, Cream of Tartar.

It has been there a very long time. I cannot remember using it for any thing except for beating egg whites. Probably decades ago.

Does it become ineffective after a certain time?

Is there someone here who actually uses it and what for?

Cream of Tartar expires after 2 to 3 years.

I think that cream of tartar might be one of those things like typewriters....pretty much only existing in our memories!

I have tried to find cream of tartar biscuits for ages to no avail.  When I ask any clerk under the age of about 50 they look at me like I am some kind of alien.

Cream of tartar biscuits are by far the best way to have strawberry shortcake.  They have a flavor that takes that dessert to a whole other level!

useful to have for cleaning pots that have burned residue

and 

can make baking powder with a cream of tartar + baking soda

I usually have one on hand

I use it in some bakine recipes - one is anything snickerdoodle.
