Boning Knives And Their Use Today

Remember the boning knives in every knife set we purchased when we set up our kitchen?

Now, we have skinless, boneless chicken.  I never buy in the bone white meat chicken.  Most likely, wives (people) today can't debone a chicken.

I use that knife to open packages.

Where is yours?

I use the paring knife to open packages.  The boning knife I use to cut mushrooms and to remove the silverskin from a pork tenderloin.

Never owned one.

Never "set up" a kitchen. It just sort of randomly came together. 😊

Re: Boning Knives And Their Use Today

I have a boning knife and I use it often.  I still buy whole chickens and cut them up. I buy chicken leg quarters and remove the thighs from the legs and remove the back portion for soup stock. I buy whole wings and seperate them at the joint.

I use my knife to remove the skin from fish. I even used it on Easter to remove ham from the bone.

I can debone a chicken, but honestly chicken tastes better cooked with the bone in. I made bone in chicken thighs this past week and my husband said they tasted much better than the deboned ones. I agreed.

[ Edited ]

I still use my ORIGINAL  Chicago Cutlery boning knife, and my Sabatier butcher knife...both are out on the kitchen counter.

Edited to add:   I recently used the Sabatier to hack down a cactus that was taller than I am.

Re: Boning Knives And Their Use Today

I think my boning knife is one of the most important tools in the kitchen, between that and a favorite paring knife. It's getting harder and harder to find meat available on the bone. We prefer pork chops and chicken both to be cooked on the bone but it's often difficult to find.

@Carmie What she said.  Plus we use it a lot to shave down the fat cap on brisket for smoking, trimming a pork butt, or when I'm cutting up a chicken.  Actually, we use ours a lot.

I have a big collection of knives I've bought over the years.

Since I am a price conscious shopper I go by the mantra "I have knives and know how to use them".  That includes my boning knife.

@Marp , I never learned how to do all that stuff.
