Bleaching a White Sink

I have a white kitchen sink. Almost from day one it has had brown stains that won't come clean. I've tried all kinds of cleaners. A friend had a white sink and her husband buffed the stains out of her sink once a month with some kind of power tool. I decided to soak my plastic cutting boards in the sink over night in a bleach and water bath. Of course the bleach also worked on the brown stains in the sink. Do you think that the bleach is harmful to the sink?
