Re: Best way to store Spinach?

[ Edited ]

Spinach should not be stored in any kind of airtight container.  Do not store in the package if opened.  Either way, it will breed bacteria, mold spores, and make your spinach full of  slime and inedible within a few days.

Avoid spinach, and salad greens that are sold prepackaged.   They may have nasty bacteria, or E. coli    If you can only fresh organic spinach, and fresh organic salad greens.   I buy at my local Farmers Market.

Use and store in a cheesecloth bag made for keeping salad greens fresh.  I have two.  One for spinach, and one for salad greens.

They are widely available at BBB, Amazon, William-Sonoma, and Sur La Table.

Spin the bag with you greens inside around your head several times until the excess moisture from your spinach (or greens) is gone.   Your spinach, and salad greens should be completely dry.  Your spinach, or salad greens, will stay fresh for at least 10 days.

Good luck.

I always buy baby spinach in the bag.     Since there is only two of us and we only eat it raw in salads we don't use it up too quickly.  Neither of us care for cooked spinach.    I keep it in a Rubbermaid Fresh Vent storage container with a sheet of paper towel in it.   I change the paper towel every few days but it still seems like the spinach wilts so quickly.

I realize it isn't all that terribly expensive but I still hate to throw so much of it away.   I wish you could buy it in a smaller bag.

Does anyone have any secret for keeping it fresh for more than just a few days?

I just came from the grocery store.  They had the Rubbermaid FreshWorks containers on special, so I got the large and medium sizes.  I hope they work.

I haven't bought spinach in a long while they have scary recall every once in awhile, plus the sand in the spinach, I sometimes have problems removing it, and it makes the roof of my mouth hurt. Have you ever had this problem. It is terribly painful. But I love wilted spinach warm with bacon. And just cooked with a little butter.

Re: Best way to store Spinach?

Walmart has a set of 3 of the Rubbermaid FreshWorks on special at $21.98:

Large is 17.3 cups

Medium is 6.3 cups

Small is 2.5 cups

Each has a lid...

This is less than what I paid for mine at the grocery store....

Oh, well....
