Oh, I forgot one! I've been brewing coffee on the stovetop with the classic old percolators my grandma used. I swear it tastes better. Dh is not convinced.

I am convinced!

I wish you could drop by for a cup!

Re: Back to basics in the kitchen - what have you done to simplify?

Hi house-cat, I too battled crummy cancer recently, I'm fine nowadays and pray you and your husband are too. as far as the coffee, all we use is an old fashioned type of perculator, it's the blue speckled one, we use it when we go camping also, it makes the best coffee!

I don't think I'm ready to give up my microwave at all, I use it for melting butter or chocolate, things like that and my kitchen is over-flowing with Temptations in the floral lace pattern, I love it and it's pretty to look at it. I get the turquoise color.

I cook just about everyday around here, we don't eat out too often, my kitchen is my favorite room in the house!

I'm glad you are doing well. Thankfully, we are too. Both of our cancers were caught very early. Even so, as you know, it's never completely off your mind. I try not to be too hyper vigilant about diet and stuff, but I have a son who is EXTREMELY health conscious. When he visits he tells me everything I'm doing wrong, lol, in a loving way. He made me get rid of all my old scraped up non-stick pots and pans. He said, "Mom.. see all the coating that's missing off these pans? Where do you think it went?" He also thinks the microwave will be the death of us, so I avoid it if possible.

I also cook everything we eat. We have little budget for eating out and when we do on occasion I always find myself thinking that I could have made it better, cheaper, healthier.. you know what I mean, I'm sure.

My kitchen is also my favorite room in the house. It's not fancy.. circa 1994.. but it's my happy place never-the-less. Smile

Thank you house cat!!! So how many cats do you have, we have 5, I love them all and would have more but my husband would kill me. LOL

Your son loves you, bless you house cat. Oh my kitchen isn't exactly how I would like it but I have it decorated really pretty so it's good enough for me. Maybe one day I'll get new counter tops but it's not a priority at all. I look forward to spending whatever little money we have on traveling across America to see everything there is.

Re: Back to basics in the kitchen - what have you done to simplify?

I've shut off the television as much as possible so I don't have to listen to "what I need to buy to simplify my increasingly busy lifestyle". {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

I gave my old dishes to DS and started buying Fiesta a few years ago. If you break a piece, it's like who cares? Replace it with yet another color! I replaced a few broken pieces of my Lenox china and crystal. THIS truly makes my heart happy! {#emotions_dlg.wub}

I went back to baking my own bread about 2 yrs ago. In the fall/winter I also make a batch of scratch biscuits on the weekend and freeze them for use during the week.

I discovered my local orchard for locally grown apples. They also have seasonal fruits and veggies which I buy and freeze for year round.

I'm trying to build a deep pantry. Fewer trips to the grocery and less eating out.

I have also cut the cable. I use Netflix, Acorn, and Hulu. I'm hardly ever in the position to watch it anymore, so I cut it off!

Good for you! We've flown coast to coast dozens if not hundreds of times but we've yet to drive across. That sounds like a great way to spend your hard earned/saved money! Have fun!

We have only one cat and one dog. I live in a small city town home. If I were out in the country I'd be in serious danger of becoming "that lady" with all the cats. {#emotions_dlg.crying}
