Re: August 2018 What's Cooking ??

I love thunderstorms - always have even as a kid and in NC they were there all the time. We do NOT have them out here in Sou Cal. Sigh. Horribly humid - really difficult to navigate in. Davey agreed to grill some hot dogs on the grill and will toss some ears of corn there also. In addition have some macaroni salad and sweet potato Fries. Works for me if he truly will get out there- I think he will as he actually likes cooking on the grill. LOL.

Really hot.

this morning Ricky helped me with the bird feeders again - he is really helpful doing that - all 4 years of age.

Have a good evening one and all.

good evening everyone. right now were having tarential downpours and thunder and lightning. i love a good thunderstorm but maria and our dog coco hate it. when maria was a kid this house got struck by lightning witch is why shes afraid of it, we ate downstairs and anna made pasta and beans ,pork and pickled home made peppers, potatoes and green peppers cooked togather, swiss chard pies and broccoli pies, and itaian string beans. and she allways puts cheese on table. provolone and regiano parm cheese. all was very good. maria made banana forster bread pudding in the air fryer and that was super good.  this year ad i spotted it this mornibg a gopher outside so now we know whats been eating our broccoli plants swiss chard plants and  some ripe large tomatoes. hope everyone has a great day.

@Pooky1  This is why I grow all of my veges and fruit, except for trees, in pots, gophers!  Anything that goes into the ground, has to go into a wire basket which DH makes according to size of plant, expensive and a pain, but when we were first here,  we planted over forty roses, and gophers ate all of them because DH didn't believe me.

I was looking at an Iris one day this year, then looked again later in the day, and it was gone,. good thing I didn't like it, lol, but still very annoying, so now will probably give all of them away unless I really love some, then into wire baskets they will go.

For several years, I saw no sign of them, but as soon as the rain came, this year is horrible, all ground upturned around plants and pots, pups digging tunnels to China trying to get at one, lol.  I don't think there is anything they won't eat, except they don't eat Salvias and lavender, so I have read.

The meal your MIL prepared sounds fantastic!  I learned to cook Italian by growing up in an Italian neighborhood so my friends were and when I was at their homes, I watched what and how the moms cooked.  I also bought toms of Italian cookbooks years ago.  I used to cook up a storm almost daily, but not any longer.  I still cook most nights, the rest leftovers are on the menu.

Re: August 2018 What's Cooking ??

Rain, rain, rain, where on earth is it? It can be quite common for us to have rain in August but last year and the year before -  NOTHING. Looks like it might be the same this year. Sigh. Beaumont, the town about 5 minutes south of us, had rain so hard Friday they had mudslides and such. Did not make it up the hill to us - darn it - Friday was just plain humid and miserable here.

Mousiegirl in my younger days I too use to plant things in the ground over wires to keep the gophers especially at bay. As time passed, just could not do it - now I do not plant anything - those days are gone. It happens.

Today will be a busy and stressful day - do not look forward to it. Ricky was rolling last night and he kept his little sister up and everyone else miserable. So sad.

Hope all eat well and have a great day. By the way did not do any cooking last night - friend stopped by and brought McDonald's for the kids - they knew I would NOT be interested. LOL. Again, have a great day!

Nice rainy day here in southern WV.    Potato soup and cornbread is our supper tonight.   Trucker girl expects to be here by dark, and asked for soup or chili.   She’s going to be here for 2 days, so the cooking begins.    Tomorrow is pot roast and chicken something on Wednesday.

@Evie2004  We are still waiting for our green tomatoes to turn red, but the weather has been cooler for a few weeks.  Normally, we would be eating them by now.  I love tomato and spring greens sandwiches on 21 grain bread, and with mayo.

Re: August 2018 What's Cooking ??

Did NO cooking tonight. am completely bushed. Been so busy last few days but yesterday FINALLY go Ricky enrolled in Pre School. Guess I can sill learn things - found out  Pre School is STATE RUN. Do not like that but had no choice. It is different from regular Child care, etc where you pay hundreds of $$ a week. Took forever to fill out the paperwork and even after that I have to wait another week to take him to school. Do NOT agree with a lot of what they do. Is this just California? Stupid indeed!

No kids here tonight as I have to be at Davey's school at 7:30 tomorrow morning - need to work on getting him graduated. We shall see. Then a zillion errands after that. Am really tired and it will only get worse I guess.

Have not had anything for dinner except some yummy grapes. What can I say?

@Winifred  All preschools are not state run, I had DD in one but of course I paid big bucks monthly.

I am glad you were able to get him in, I think it will do wonders for him, he will learn so much, especially social skills.

Re: August 2018 What's Cooking ??

Beautiful weather lately, still in the seventies.  I hope it stays this way in spite of what the weather chart states.

We have been eating leftovers this week, the usual steak tacos with leftover steak, sausages and salad and pasta, but tonight, I will cook.

I used to make frequently during the hot months a recipe called a Parsley Salad.  Five bunches of parsley is used, a real pain to strip the leaves, room temp rice, I had been using Trader Joe's brown rice from the freezer section, may mix it with a wild rice blend, havn't decided yet, with a vinaigrette, and I decided to add prawns to the salad to make it a main meal, fabulous if I do say so myself, so will see tonight if I still love it as I used to.

I do a lot of shopping at amazon, but I have found that I can find what I want at Walmart for less and free shipping, in addition to two day delivery, which I don't get at amazon as I refuse to join prime and pay yet more money, and I can get things at Walmart, including some food products, that I can't at amazon.

I buy 50lb bags of fertilizer, free ship, and on and on, so I now go to Walmart first, then compare, but Walmart usually wins.

I hope everyone enjoys their weekend.
