@house_cat I'm not territorial as you are but can't stand people in the kitchen with me when I'm  cooking. Especially holiday meals when you have to concentrate - this is in oven for 45 minutes, that for 35, add cheese to the top of this last 5 minutes, etc.  I have to concentrate & be alone or I'll  mess dinner up. Can chat DURING or AFTER dinner.

This sometimes bugs me too and in our house the kitchen is sort of the gathering area, I just make sure I don't have any more than a few sips of wine until after dinner is done!

The only thing I was territorial about was loading the dishwasher. I wanted you to leave your dishes in the sink so I could do it my way.

[ Edited ]

@house_cat ...we are kitchen sisters.  I have two grown sons living with us.  One is 27, working and finishing second college degree.  One is 34 and travels as a artist 7months out of the year and is home here with us the rest of the year.

I'm a light sleeper and still got to get up for work.  Now while I'm glad my men hang out together, at home, yes we keep different hours.  Like the 2am hour and they sometimes get hungry.  The smell of bacon and garlic or whatever wafts upstairs...of course I wake up.  They are down there slicing and dicing.   Ugghhhh and while they at least make the effort to clean up, I'm an OCD kitchen cleaner so it's not mama clean.  I have teasingly suggested "what's wrong with a bowl of cereal?"  Or a sandwich 😫.  Hubs and I are kind of bohemian parents... like it's all good and we are very close to our adult children but I got the kitchen obsession and I need to try and let it go some and be grateful it's only food they are dishing up...but I definitely know what you mean.

My mom always told us after 8pm her kitchen was closed!!! Same phrase.  Stop and get fast food after being out half the night or eat a sandwich...

No, the kitchen is not mine, it is a family space that belongs to my husband and son too.

Just need to add something I finally let go of was the guys (hubs too) standing and eating their dinner cause they were talking and stuff.  Um, whats wrong with the counter/table.  Just a thing they do.  I talked myself down on that 😵‍💫

Re: Are you territorial when it comes to your kitchen?

Just my husband and me so not an issue.  We pretty much eat at same time and we both clean up after we eat.  He use to cook all the time but since his health issues not so much any more.  I miss that.  Cooking has never been my favorite thing to do but I keep it simple.

We have a dishwasher so we don't have dirty dishes in the sink.  I like everything cleaned up before I sit down for the evening.  If we want a snack later it isn't usually something we have to cook.

I can live with everything not so perfect but there was a time when it drove me crazy.

Re: Are you territorial when it comes to your kitchen?

Oh my I’m a germaphobic with everything , remember the old show Monk ? he had nothing on me lol 😂
I am definitely obsessed with the kitchen ( actually the whole house ) I am constantly cleaning
No one is allowed to wash their hands in the kitchen sink ,EVER I have no problem sending anyone to the guest bath to wash their hands
I’m constantly disinfecting the sink and cleaning the refrigerator
I’m obsessed with dishcloths / towels also
Every morning when I get up I unload the dishwasher and put soap in it we load the dishes in as we use them all day
I clean as I cook , I was raised that way , the kitchen is completely clean when the food is ready , then when we are finished eating the dishwasher is loaded and dishes washed , counters cleaned
I used to have a catering business if I had dirty dishes while one load was washing in the dishwasher the dirty pans was soaking in hot soapy water while waiting to be washed
When I was through with the food the kitchen was cleaned before I left with the food

I’d never be able to sleep with dirty dishes or counters
Even though I’m obsessed with a clean kitchen our kitchen is the heart of our home
Everyone goes straight to the kitchen when our family and friends are over
I’m easily distracted and it’s very hard to concentrate on cooking with the kitchen full of people and everyone talking but I manage somehow to complete the meal

@Shihtzursqmom

@2sisters

@Marp

@Harpa

I know there are more of us, I'm sorry if I missed anyone - it seems like we're all alike!  Thank you for posting and letting me know I'm not alone.

@bmorechick

Wow, did you bring back memories for me!  My son would come home from work in the middle of the night and pop a frozen pizza into the oven, then go upstairs to shower and change.  More than once I was awakened by the smell of "just-about-to-set-the-house-on-fire-pizza".  I'm a poor sleeper to begin with and that made it worse.

Re: Are you territorial when it comes to your kitchen?

It's just DH and me.

DH fixes breakfast every morning and cleans the kitchen.

Like several others mentioned, there are bigger problems in the world than a dirty spoon in the sink.

Im thankful to have someone to be with and share chores.

Being meticulous is a part of my past😘
