Are you territorial when it comes to your kitchen?

Something @ninjawife said in another thread about her DD's messy cooking, brought back memories for me.

When my grown son lived with us for a time, he kept very different hours and would often start cooking just moments after I deemed the kitchen "closed" for the night.  It drove me CRAZY, because even though he cleaned up after himself (for the most part), he didn't clean and straighten the way I do after dinner.

I remember us kids asking my mom for snacks in the evening and I can still hear her saying, "The kitchen is CLOSED". We knew that if that light was turned off, the chances were slim to none for getting anything more than a quick snack from the cupboard.  I didn't understand her then, but I do now.

I'm very meticulous about my kitchen and I can't go to bed unless it is all tidied up. Does anyone else feel similarly territorial about their kitchen?

Re: Are you territorial when it comes to your kitchen?

You know where in commercials & TV shows couples are in there cooking together?

Well, it ain't me!! Yes, I am territorial in that I do not want anyone around when I'm baking or cooking. Unless... it's the grandchildren. Then I don't care how much of a mess they make. I show them how to do things, and let them do however.

But like you, @house_cat , I keep a tidy kitchen at all times, and can't stand as much as a spoon in the sink.

No!  DH does most of the cooking and is in charge of keeping it "tidy."  My least favorite room in the condo!!!

Re: Are you territorial when it comes to your kitchen?

The kitchen is definitely not my territory.  The only thing I am responsible for there is eating and looking at how nice

it is.  DH cooks and cleans up as he goes and after meals.  Cleaning lady keeps it clean.  We do not get food poisoning so I guess all is good.

Our kitchen at home was never closed.  My mother was a wonderful cook - really good meals.  My dad worked 3 different shifts and there was always a hot meal when he got home from work.  We came home for lunch hour from school and had our supper about 4 o'clock so Dad had a hot meal when he was working the 7 to 3 shift.

When he was working 3 to 11 p.m., Mom had a hot dinner for him then.  and 11 to 7 a.m. hot breakfast and for us kids before school. My Mother cooked all day in between house cleaning, clothes washing, ironing and grocery shopping.   That may be why I have no interest in cooking or cleaning.

I like to cook, but anyone who offers to clean up after me is welcome to do it.

Nope. Not territorial at all.

I don't run a restaurant nor a B&B with fixed hours. I don't consider myself The Help.

If you're family or guest please eat when you're hungry. Late night is okay. A dirty dish in the sink doesn't keep me awake.

The world has bigger problems right noww.

Anyone is welcome in my kitchen.  Just don't touch anything!

The more I learn the more I realize how little I know.
Are you setting an example or being an example?

I am not territorial about the kitchen at all.  I don't stress about it at all and put any used items in the sink as we use them during the day (like an empty propel bottle that I am going to re-fill when I make another using powder) until I am ready to wash or put that item in the dishwasher.

If my dog doesn't like you, neither do I.

@house_cat I'm not territorial as you are but can't stand people in the kitchen with me when I'm  cooking. Especially holiday meals when you have to concentrate - this is in oven for 45 minutes, that for 35, add cheese to the top of this last 5 minutes, etc.  I have to concentrate & be alone or I'll  mess dinner up. Can chat DURING or AFTER dinner.

Re: Are you territorial when it comes to your kitchen?

The only thing tht bugs me is that I wish I had two sinks, when my husband comes in from outside he always washes his hands in the kitchen sink and it is sometimes at inoperturne times.  I remember my sister use to complain and tell her son he couldn't wash his hands in sthe kitchen ....she had three sinks in her kitchen!  I never understood that.  If I ever son the lottery I would get a bigger kitchen with more than one sink, other than that our kitchen is a good size, I would like a walk in pantry though I just have a closet type pantry, I envy my daughters walk in.

Years ago my mother in law would stay with us, now it seems silly the things that would bug me because she would cook and clean and I should have just been thankful for that, she had a habit of just dumping all of the silverware together and I liked to separate them in the fork, spoon, knife slots.  Now I pretty much just dump them together!  I do have a silverware holder thing for the two nice matching sets but the misc stuff gets dumped.

I think when you get older you quit sweating the small stuff.
