Re: Anyone Store Sugars In Their L&L?

Thanks for your experience!

Mominohio, that's where we were, down in Holmes County.....shopping! Did get some cheese and put it in a cooler to make the trip home to Northern MI.

The prices at the bulk store were really good. Not sure if we'll make the trip down to Holmes Co or head for Shipshewana.

How fun! We probably have passed in the aisle in a store or two over time!

I purchased two sets of the large storage containers of this brand that have the tiny wheels, and use them for my white sugar, flours, and tea bags.   I always have at least 10 lbs of sugar available.

Re: Anyone Store Sugars In Their L&L?

White granular sugar lasts forever.  Brown sugars almost as long.  Brown sugar is in fact processed white sugar that has had some of the original molasses put back into it.  If you have molasses at home you can make your own brown sugar.  Light brown = 1 cup granular white sugar and 1 1/2 Tablespoons molasses.  Dark brown = 1 cup white granulated sugar and 3 Tablespoons molasses.  The only sugar I might worry about is confectioners sugar.  The powdery white sugar is made with cornstarch to keep it from clumping.  If your  white sugar clumps into a brick just do what everyone used to do and grate off what you need.  All that being said Lock and Lock should work just fine.

I do store my brown sugar in a L&L but I purchased one of the little bears that you soak  in water for 30 minutes and then it gets put into the sugar container.     It really helps to keep the sugar soft.   I usually take it out and re-hydrate it about every 3-4 months.

I've always stored everything in Lock & Locks, ever since I knew about them, anyway.  We went from one house in the woods to another 450 miles away nine years ago.  Varmints galore, squirrels, ants, bees, bats, you name it.  This house doesn't have the cracks the old one did, but we can go to Florida and not worry.
