I am about as basic as you can get! And if I attempt anything else, which is rare if ever, I have to cosult a recipe. I don't like to try to prepare anything which takes a lot of ingredients and involves a lot of time and work. It's just not worth it to me! I am not a natural cook -- don't care for it, nor have the nack for it. A lot of what is eaten in our house admittedly is partially prepared things from the food store. We have relied more lately on takeout, but we try to pick somewhat more healthy options. Sometimes, neither of us feels like bothering with cooking anything and we will just go with soup, bagels or whatever we can easily find!
As for cooking shows, they are fun to watch, but I have no desire to even try to make 99% of what they make! They act like it's easy --- it's not! And so much of those shows, they use all these different kinds of hot peppers and spices and ingredients that I don't think are in the average person's cupboards or vocabulary! And another thing --- thing has been going on for a long time --- but what's with the egg on top of everything??? Very unsavoury looking to me!
The only cooking show I have watched that they do have some things which seem normal and possibly could be done is The Kitchen.

@Sooner wrote:More-advanced-than-Amateur Chef! And I am proud of it! I have been cooking since I was 14, blessed to have been watching Julia Child, David Rosengarten, Jacques Pepin, Emeril and other real chefs since.
I have cooked my way through Julia's first 2 cookbooks in the 1970s, like Ina Garten and Martha Stewart, and from them learned how to make anything from souffles to boning a leg of lamb. Cook through Julia's Mastering the Art of French Cooking and you can make anything!
I have a huge collection of cookbooks (don't use them just read them!) and kitchen stuff--and it is a joy to me. I wrote Julia a fan letter and have a note handwritten from her that I treasure!
ME TOO! I HAD over 250 cookbooks and just reduced to about 175. I gave most of them to my hair cutter, who was beyond thrilled. I LOVE to cook. I never make a recipe as written and my husband laughs that he can tell if I've made something because I have scribbles all over the recipe (which I print out). I sometime combine several recipes or just put my spin on them. I love to cook, bake, stir fry ... whatever it takes. About 2 years after we moved into our house, over 20 years ago and replaced the stove, I was looking at really nice ones but not top of the line. My husband suggested I look at one of the really expensive ones, but I didn't want to spend the $. He said, just look then ... and that was it! We bought one with gas burners, an electric convection oven and really heavy grates. I have been happily cooking and baking on/in it for all these years and loving every minute.
Edited to add... it's just the 2 of us, but I love to entertain friends and cook for them as well.
