@Carmie wrote:Last week when I was shopping for my New Year Eve goodies, I stood in a long line at the check out. There was a young lady behind me and we started talking after I commented how stupid I was for shopping on that day..too busy and long lines.
She said shopping was her job and she was working. She worked for instacart. I mentioned that the store was really stocked up even with the ton of shoppers, they were keeping up and replenishing the shelves.
Any how, she told me when something was out of stock or she couldn't locate the item, instacart charged her for it. She had to cover the cost of the item out of a her pocket and that they ( instacart) did not want to lose money when they had to reduce the amount of the total bill.
I was shocked! I don't know if this is standard everywhere, but apparently it is where I live.
This policy is disturbing to me.
@Carmie & @Kachina624, I am very skeptical about this information.

I used Instacart several times last Spring.I stopped because I found the service & substitutions varied depending who your shopper was.I was only satisfied half the time.
I also found that between the delivery fee, service charge & tip I wound pay about an extra $25.In addition they raised the price of the items. If I was happy with the service I would have done it considering the pandemic.
I was also told by one of the shoppers that every shopper can see all the orders placed within their service area. They can see the tip & size of the order & decide wether they want to "shop the order or not".
Anyway, One of my local supermarkets has their own delivery service. If you spend under $100 you're charged a flat delivery fee of $8. If you're order is over a $100 delivery is free. Their drivers are union workers. Tips are given in cash with no pressure to tip a specific ammount. If you have coupons the driver takes them & your issued a credit. If You ever get something that u don't like you can call & they immediately issue a credit.
Now that the infection rate is rising I will go back to the deliveries from my local supermarket. But I won't use Instacart.

I didn't want to believe it either. It sounded too crazy to be true. But, that is what she told me. I don't know anyone who works for this company to ask and see if she was being truthful.
I can't imagine anyone wanting to work for them if that is true.

Thank you, everyone, for your replies!
I hate to give anyone a bad review. I always put my order in 6 days ahead of time, so I feel like that is plenty of time to get it in the "q" so to speak and get my time saved.
I understand an occasional issue when unforeseen things happen and an order is delivered late, but when it happens more often than not, I don't think that's acceptable.
If shoppers are able to see the shopping orders ahead of time and see which ones are larger and which ones are offering larger tips and can pick which ones they want, and, therefore, they probably give better service, I guess I understand where they are coming from.
However, you don't always need a huge order and I, for one, am not going to put a much larger tip up front if I don't know how the service is going to be! I always give a little better than the basic tip, and if the service has been really good, on time, and they followed all the instructions, then I will give a much higher tip! I have never given anyone a truly bad review but I have marked Good as opposed to Excellent and I have written comments such as --- Order arriving late or product not as ordered, etc.

@Carmie I think she was pulling your leg. How could she be held responsible for items not found? Now, if the order total goes down because many items were unavailable, the tip will drop if it's calculated by a percentage of sales. Or, the customer might get annoyed and change the tip.
I have had many items on my list unavailable, especially at the height of the pandemic last year. If the shopper was charged, he or she would have probably owed money to Instacart. It wouldn't be worth it to even work for the company.

@Janey2 wrote:I have been using instacart since March, no problems at all. I have to say my orders are all about the same, which I consider large. I do not pretend to know the inner workings of instacart but I can tell you the bigger the order I would think the shopper would think they will probably getting a bigger tip. But on the other hand they spend more time shopping, so it seems to even out. When your order does not come on time rate the shopper low and write why in the comment section. Do not tip high. The shopper depends on the 5 star ratings as they make extra for that order.
I vehemently disagree with this, @Janey2. We've never had a delivery that came late, but if we did, I would not assume that it was the shopper was at fault. As for not tipping high, that is relative. I check the box for 15%, no matter what.
These shoppers are under much pressure and also are not exactly rolling in money.

I am very close with someone who works for Instacart. This is absolutely untrue. In fact I went Instarcarting with her today and there were a couple of items unavailable and my friend was able to refund them through the app right away. It didn't come out of my friend's pocket.
