My MIL who was born and raised in Europe always cut cake and other pasteries this way.  My husband does this too,  They always cut everything in the middle and push the ends together.... even a loaf of homemade bread.

Actually, it's a lot easier to use a piece of bread with a toothpick in the center to keep the cake fresh.

 

How many cakes can have a rubberband to hold them together?

@momtochloe,Not to mention very few cakes have that kind of icing.  I hate that kind.  No flavor.

The jumbo Lock & Lock with the handle works wonders in keeping things fresh for days.  Use it for my pies and cakes.
