A good French style baguette

[ Edited ]

Oddly enough, Walmart of all places has a very good par-baked French-style baguette. I was shopping there yesterday morning and wasn't sure what I'd have for lunch and saw the baguettes and decided, "Why not?" I think it cost $1.89. (Edited to add: I found the receipt and it was $1.80 not $1.89.)  brought it home, tossed it in the oven at 375 for nine minutes, and then let it rest for about fifteen minutes and it was an exceptionally good baguette. I ate all but eight inches of it that I saved for French toast this morning. I was a little concerned when I opened the bag as the smell of the fake sour flavoring was pretty strong and I hate that flavoring, but I couldn't taste it after the baking, so that was good. It was just an exceptionally good French-style baguette. If you like a baguette and your Walmart carries the par-baked ones, give it a try. You might be pleasantly surprised. (Or maybe I just got lucky and got a good one.) I'll be buying them again. It's about as cheap as I can make them and a lot easier than making them myself.

Re: A good French style baguette

@gardenman  Thanks for the review.  I have never found a baguette here in the states that was really worthy of calling it a baguette.  Of course, I do not live in a big city with exceptional bakeries.  When I lived in St. Martin, my day started with getting a fresh baguette, along with other pastries.

The next time that I hear salt and ice together, it better be in a margarita!

Yeah, finding good bread can be a challenge and I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. It had a very good crust, an open and airy interior structure with irregular voids. Good flavor. It was just a surprisingly good baguette at Walmart of all places. It made for a great lunch yesterday and the French toast this morning was also very good. I was impressed.

Re: A good French style baguette

@gardenman  In St. Martin, we get what is called French toast bread, which is basically brioche.  While that makes excellent french toast, I now have croissant toast delivered to my home.  La Boulangerie has sales several times a year, and I keep the bread in the freezer.  It makes excellent french toast.

@gardenman

Thanks for your review!  I have been looking for something exactly like this!

Weg has wonderful baguettes but the bakery never has them ready when I am shopping (6 am)

Where exactly in Wally did you find it?

Frozen?

Bakery?

Can you freeze it uncooked for future use?

Would you please post the name so I know what to look for?

I have GOT to find this!  LOL

Thanks in advance!

I dug the wrapper out of the trash and will post photos below. It's their "Marketside French Baguette." This one had a "best if used by" date of 11/17/2021. My Walmart isn't a Super Walmart, just a plain old normal Walmart. They have a counter of bakery goods (croissants, some breads, etc.) and this was in that area between the bacon aisle and the bread aisle.

Here are some photos of the wrapper.

And the back of the wrapper.

And the "Best if used by" date sticker.

It was very good loaf of bread. As you can see they say to heat it for 8-10 minutes, so I did it for nine.

Many many thanks!

You are so kind to dig the wrapper out!

It really helps me to see a pic of what I am looking for.

Thanks again!

I haven't tried this, but Walmart's Marketside brand bakery products are very good.  I recommend their Italian Cream Cake and bundt pound cakes.

Re: A good French style baguette

@gardenman  After reading your post, I felt the need to go buy one myself.  It should go perfect with dinner tonight as I'm making lasagna and a salad.  I will make garlic bread with it.  My Wal-Mart sells it for $1.98.  Thanks for the tip.  🍞

Re: A good French style baguette

@gardenman  You mentioned sour.  Do you make sourdough bread?  I've had starter going for 6 years now.  Have made all kinds of bread...shared the starter with lots of people.

Our favorite thing to make with it is the King Arthur sourdough pizza crust.  Also I found a recipe for sourdough chocolate chip cookies.  I use mini chocolate chips in them.  Now by orders of DH and the neighbors I can't make any other cookie...lol... I haven't tasted them because I eat plant based but they stay nice and soft.  Almost muffin like.

Have a good Friday.  Enjoy your new chair...DW
