Re: $719 for a coffee maker !?!?

I scored my $750 Saeco super automatic espresso machine at QVC's Wilmington outlet for less than $300.  I had been looking for a super automatic and couldn't believe it when I saw that box sitting on a shelf.  I had no idea QVC carried that brand.  What a find that was!  It's been going strong for over 15 years.  I love specialty coffees and it was worth every penny, even at full price.  Once it dies, I'll replace it replace it at a higher cost.  I agree it's not for everyone, but it's worth it to me.  Others choose to spend money on things I wouldn't want.  Everyone has the option to decide what they like and what they can afford.

Re: $719 for a coffee maker !?!?

I was never one that had a pocket marked "disposable income" or money to waste. I know the idea behind you get what you pay for, but somewhere in there it should also be the idea that what does the job right is enough.

I drink coffee every day, and I am not one that has to go sit in a building where they make "fancy" coffee drinks to enjoy what I like. The logo on the cup does not make a difference to me.

But, then, the logo on a piece of jewlery or on my clothing makes no difference to me either. If it's something I like, I will buy it, if not it stays in the store. I don't shop for something by the name on the tag.

When I bought my first car, it wasn't the name on the fender, it was can it get me back and forth to work. It still is. I feel no need to "show off".

If the "Jones'" want a 20,000 square feet home, that's okay, but I don't need it and I don't want all the work that goes with it. I'll stick with 1,000 square feet.

My $30.00 Mr. Coffee maker works just fine, so I'll set that "savings" aside for something I really need. Same goes for the $400.00 blender, the $400.00 cast iron pot, etc. Those things just aren't going on my "Need to have" list. They aren't even going to be marked as a "Wish".

We each have our own wants. None are wrong, or right. That's the joy in all being different.

What it all seems to boil down to with this OP is an obsessive desire to go back in time. I don't know or care what kind of coffee my grandmother drank; I love that we have such better coffee and coffee appliances today.

By anyone's taste standards a cup of instant coffee in no way resembles a cup from a coffee maker whether it be a Nespresso, Mr Coffee or a high end super automatic appliance.  If instant floats your boat go for it!  If not go with what works for you.  Plain and simple.  I am not one for "fancy" labels.  In fact I have never even been in a Starbucks.   In fact, MacDonald's coffee has consistantly been rated #1 over the competition.   I just enjoy a full bodied cup of coffee and am in the position to choose the machine that best meets my taste requirements.  Were I a guest at your home and you offered me a cup of instant coffee I would graciously accept and enjoy that as well.  The price has NOTHING to do with the choice.  I agree Suzy.. some things have improved over time and no harm in taking advantage if you choose to! Tessam I believe Dunkin Donuts has the best store brand coffee. Not a fan at all at the burnt Starbucks blend.  McDonalds falls in the middle to me. A frriend said 7-11 has good coffee but Ive boycotted them for over a decade.

I've never had either... I was simply using the info to illustrate that based on some "polls" the 99 cent a cup version can be just as desirable to some as a more expensive option.  Smiley Happy

Re: $719 for a coffee maker !?!?

Besides enjoying my espresso machine, I often enjoy a delicious plain cup of rich black coffee from my other coffee maker that makes what I believe to be a perfect cup from fresh ground beans.  Other people are happy to drink Folgers or like brand from a pot that has sat on a hot plate until it is burned because that is what they are used to and they may cover the taste with creamer or not.  They might hate the taste of mine and I'd definitely hate the taste of theirs.  Some restaurant coffee tastes like dishwater in comparison to what I make, I have to imagine that they intended it to be a cup of coffee.

I had a Keurig for a couple years and liked it until I tired of buying the pods and wanted something better.  Moved on to a Breville that ground the beans before making the brew which had it's own problems.  Now using a MoccaMaster with a metal carafe, no hot plate to burn the brew.  If it dies, I'll replace with the same brand.  Same with the espresso machine, repair or replace: Saeco.

I'm frugal in other ways, I wash my dishes by hand rather than spend a grand or near on a machine that my two hands can handle very well although I may relent at some future date.  There's probably a lot of things I don't buy that other people spend money on which is their perogative.
