Where do you find your favorites?
The only starch I want is stuffing. I serve that only once a year. I mostly serve green vegetables low in carbs.

@ECBG we have worst and best all mixed in.I don't eat those foods any other time so I figure it's a special treat.I really never feel well after the dinner though so I guess I am not used to digesting all of the carbs and fat.

@ECBG ...Lots of healthy yummy plant based food but I can't verify that the amounts eaten will not do some temporary damage!

once a year won't hurt
if you are sensible the rest of the year
disclaimer, I didn't read the article, but I can guess at what it says

I don't know how they arrived at the "bad". For example the mashed potatoes with the whole milk and margarine. Personally I would say the bad part of this is the margarine. Using butter would be healthier, but perhaps have more calories. So it's probably the calorie count that makes a dish bad.

@CLEM I guess when you are stacking mashed potatoes (and I agree for me with real butter) it is worse than roasted brussels sprouts (which I also love). I believe in everything in moderation. I love stuffing/dressing but wouldn't want it every day . . . at least I don't think so . . . ![]()

I think food at the holidays or other special events/occasions throughout the year is about so much more than physical health.
Assuming that people eat moderately and reasonably healthy most of the year, those back yard barbecues for the 4th of July, the Thanksgiving feast, or the holidays sweet treats on a couple of days at Christmas aren't going to kill most people (of course the combative here will require the following disclaimer....not for those with severe food restrictions for medical reasons/food allergies/diabetes etc, where food can do harm or kill).
Food is social, it carries traditions, it creates moods and feelings in people, it's preparation is a way of expressing love. It is to be enjoyed. If having a little of the 'bad' stuff every once in awhile makes you happy, you should do it. If it really does make you feel bad, or takes you down the path of not staying on a healthy eating course, it might best be avoided.
But to stress about one meal (or several throughout they year), it's calories, fat, carbs, etc. when otherwise practicing reasonably healthy and sound eating habits the rest of the year, is simply a waste of time and energy, and often done by women as some form of society's expectations of what we should think and do about food consumption.
Everyone should do what makes them feel best, including not getting wrapped up about overdoing once in awhile, if it brings you pleasure to do so.
