I was considering purchasing a moissanite ring but all of the ones that I looked at that I like start round $1500 and some are as high as $4000. I was looking at Charles and Colvart and Brilliant Earth. So I decided to have a diamond ring that has been in the safety deposit box for years sized rather than spending a lot of money on a moissanite When I took it out of the box I noticed that the prongs look dirty. It is a Tiffany setting. I put the ring in a cleaning solution but I can't get to the inside of the ring. Would using an untrasonic cleaner be the best way to go? I know that the jeweler will clean it when I take it in but I just wanted to try cleaning it before.

If the setting is GOLD, you can soak the ring in household ammonia for a few minutes. Use a SOFT toothbrush to scrub it clean.
(If you are "on the road"....you can always use toothpaste or shampoo to clean your jewelry).

I use a toothpick to clean behind the stone!

@Desertdi Thanks for this suggestion. The setting is white gold. So I'll try this

Get one of these cleaning sticks. They are made just for cleaning diamond jewelry. Just twist up the cleaning solution and then work the bristle-tip around the stone and setting. Comes out clean and sparkling.
ETA-
After you've cleaned the ring, it might be clean enough to where you won't need to take it to a jeweler. Plus you'll have this stick handy for future cleanings.

I'd let the jeweler do it. When I had my rings cut off and resized, I was impressed how much cleaner they were and how much better they looked. He did a great job!

@kaydee50 I probably will do this. It's an old ring that was my great aunt's engagement ring purchased sometime between 1915 and 1920. The prongs maybe platinum but I am pretty sure the band is white gold. The stone itself is beautiful. I don't know why I haven't worn it before. I figure at my age if I better start wearing it soon.

Put it in a pan with water and liquid laundry detergent, bring to a boil, let it soak then scrub with a soft toothbrush. A woman I worked with's son was a jeweler and this was how he said to clean jewelry at home.

Lots of great ideas!

Laundry detergent can cloud the stone, and I wouldn't boil ANY jewelry. That is WAY too drastic.
