Where and how do you store your earrings?

I used to save the boxes that earrings came in but I have so many and many that did not come in boxes and those cheapy things that come with the jewelry chest that are made of 0.0014 inch thick veneer are so unstable that trying to get earrings off them is an exercise in patience and virtue, as they tend to make me lose my patience which, in turn, makes me say things I might not normally say.

Any clever ideas for storing earrings if you own dozens of pairs, or should I just give some away.
