What is the most common type of gold chain for pendants?

My husband bought me this pendant sp0731gd-rg-aaaa-10.jpgbut I think it needs a more substantial chain. Would a rolo or box chain or another type be better? Also what gram weight constitutes a sturdy chain?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I like a rope chain as it is so pliable.

I think that a solid box chain or small solid rope chain would work well.

I was told years ago that the box chain is one of the most sturdy that you can get.  Whenever I have a high value item on a chain, I always use a box chain.

I like a box chain.  Even in a small gauge, it is very strong.  I like the sleek look, too.

@CAcableGirl2 It is the most sturdy. I used to work at Zales years ago & that's what I was told.

¼ gram per inch will hold all but the heaviest of pendants.   ½ gram per inch is pretty sturdy......1 gram per inch is "luxury".    I prefer a snake chain for its simplicity.

Box, wheat/spiga or rope.  The gram weight may have to be higher depending on the weight of the pendant.

Re: What is the most common type of gold chain for pendants?

Thanks for the responses. The garnet is 4.77 carats. I wanted a smaller stone, but my husband bought it so I had no choice. It comes with an 18 inch thin chain. I want a 16 inch. I found a 1mm rope chain on amazon for $83 and is one gram. The same company also has a rope chain for $105 for 2 grams and is 1.0 mm wide.

I can't decide if the shiny box chain or the rope would look better. One gram seems light to me.

PS--I have a $50 gift card for Amazon that someone gave me for Christmas so I want to use that as part of the payment.
