What does "Artisan Crafted" mean to you?

I used to think it meant made in Bali or Indonesia.   Now I take it to mean totally hand made items with intricate scrolling and beadwork.  Country of oriigin doesn't seem to matter anymore.  Should it?

No it shouldn't.  To me "artisan crafted" means hand made, not mass produced, and country of origin is irrelevant.

@depglass

I've always thought it means that the original or prototype was desiged and made  by hand by a skilled craftsman -  no matter what the country of origin.

When you are selling thousands of an item - must be mass produced.

Same as when they are saying something was hand crocheted - and sell thousands of identical pieces.

Nothing at all to me.  It's two words strung together to make a sales pitch!

Like "greatest", "newest," "revolutionary," etc. etc.

From the dictionary:

ar·ti·san
/ˈärdəzən/

noun
  1. a worker in a skilled trade, especially one that involves making things by hand.

It has come to be a marketing ploy.  Trying to be something handmade and special.

It doesn't have to be jewelry either....there are all kinds of things that are "artisan crafted" such as woodworking, pottery, glass making, paper craft, quilting, leather craft, fiber craft, etc.

Why would one think it is just jewelry made in certain countries?  Many of us who make handcrafted items that we sell on Etsy like to think of our goods as artisan crafted.

I would say handmade and not by machines.
