WHAT MAKES A MONACO A MONACO

I am just curious about somthing and I know one or more of you ladies knows the answer. I have two, the black onyx & the mint quartz. I always assumed that since all the stones were squarely cut that that was what made it the monaco style. Now there are heart shapes & they are called monaco's too. So my question is what makes a monaco a monaco?Thanks ladies!
